ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team made quite the statement in Lee & Penny Anderson Arena Wednesday evening. Fueled by a second half performance, the Tommies downed the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles 71-66. With the win, St. Thomas improves to 12-13 overall and 5-6 in Summit League play. The Tommies also moved into a tie for fourth place in the conference standings.
QUICK HITS:
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: St. Thomas set the tone early, opening the game with back-to-back paint touches from Werner and Sand to build a quick advantage. Oral Roberts answered behind Jalei Oglesby, who knocked down an early jumper and later connected from beyond the arc to keep the Golden Eagles within striking distance. A late three-pointer from Laura Hauge (West St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) helped the Tommies maintain momentum, and St. Thomas carried a 19-17 lead into the second quarter.
Second Quarter: The second period saw both teams trading runs. Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Area) sparked St. Thomas with a pull-up three early in the quarter, but Oral Roberts responded with aggressive play in transition and on the offensive glass. The Golden Eagles closed the half on a surge, tying the game at 34-34 after a late basket in the final seconds before halftime.
Third Quarter: St. Thomas came out of the locker room with renewed energy, using defensive pressure to fuel its offense. Werner scored off a fast break early in the quarter, and the Tommies strung together a decisive run behind timely shooting from Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) and Hood. Sand and Autumn McCall (Blaine, Minn. / Centennial) added second-chance points in the paint as St. Thomas outscored Oral Roberts 21-9 in the quarter to take a commanding 55-43 lead.
Fourth Quarter: Oral Roberts made one final push in the fourth, cutting into the deficit with perimeter shooting and trips to the free throw line. The Tommies responded with poised execution, getting key baskets from Sand inside and steady free-throw shooting down the stretch. St. Thomas maintained its composure in the closing minutes to seal the 71-66 victory.
