FARGO, N.D. – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team gave the (RV) North Dakota State University Bison all they could handle Thursday evening. With nothing to lose (except the game itself), the Tommies walked into the Scheels Center with an upset on their minds and nearly pulled it off. St. Thomas trailed by two points with a minute to play, but NDSU's clutch free throw shooting resulted in a 73-67 victory for the Bison.
With the loss, the Tommies are now 13-14 on the season and 6-7 in Summit League play.
QUICK HITS:
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: St. Thomas opened the game with energy, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead behind baskets from Mikayla Werner (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) and Sand. North Dakota State responded with a 10-4 run midway through the quarter, but the Tommies answered with a 7-0 stretch capped by a Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) three-pointer and a Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Area) tip-in. The teams traded baskets late, with Feuerbach scoring inside in the final minute to knot the game at 19 heading into the second.
Second Quarter: It looked like the Bison would run away with the second quarter, as the Tommies were held to just three points on a Kammie Ludwig (Geneseo, Ill. / Geneseo) three in the opening five minutes. However, St. Thomas responded in the second half of the quarter, pulling within three at 32-29 with 1:16 to go in the quarter. A late basket by NDSU gave the home team a 34-29 lead walking into the locker room at the half.
Third Quarter: McCall helped spark the Tommies early in the third, scoring five quick points to cut the margin to four. After Sand knocked down a three-pointer to pull St. Thomas within six, the Bison responded with a late push, closing the quarter on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to 51-43.
Fourth Quarter: St. Thomas made its strongest push in the final period, shooting 66.7 percent from the field. A McCall three-pointer followed by back-to-back free throws from Sand pulled the Tommies within four with just under seven minutes to play. St. Thomas continued to apply pressure, cutting the deficit to two on multiple occasions, but North Dakota State converted timely free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
