ST. PAUL, MINN. — It was a spooktacular All Hallow's Eve for the University of St. Thomas football team. The Tommies had a spooky good time defeating the Davidson College Wildcats 35-7 at O'Shaughnessy Stadium Saturday afternoon, improving to 7-2 overall and 4-1 Pioneer Football League (PFL) play. St. Thomas also improved to 6-0 at home for the first time since the 2022 season.

QUICK HITS:

  • Nick Peipert (Barrington, Ill. / Barrington) threw for 257 yards and rushed for 116 in Saturday's victory and accounted for four Tommie touchdowns. He rushed for three, tying Gabriel Abel's (Trenton, N.J. / Salisbury) single-game high this season, and threw for one, connecting with Pierce McCrary (Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Kennedy) in the second quarter.
  • Quentin Cobb-Butler (Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury) and McCrary remained Peipert's favorite targets, combining for 220 receiving yards on 17 receptions. Cobb-Butler tallied a career-high 126 receiving yards on 15 targets, while McCrary recorded 94 receiving yards and one touchdown.
  • Will Seymour (St. Louis Park, Minn. / Benilde-St. Margaret's) led the team with eight tackles, seven solo, and 3.5 sacks.

SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter:
The Tommies turned their two first-quarter possessions into 10 points, finishing the quarter ahead 10-7 after Ben Hoiland's (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds View) 27-yard field goal. Earlier, Peipert connected twice with Cobb-Butler for 39 yards on the first scoring drive before recovering Abel's fumble for the first touchdown of the game. Hoiland's extra point tied the score at 7-7 after Davidson scored on its first offensive drive. Seymour's sack helped St. Thomas force a Wildcat punt between those two scoring drives.

Second Quarter: After Preston Franklin's (Kansas City, Mo. / Liberty) interception, the Tommies took control in the second quarter, turning the short field into Peipert's second touchdown of the day. Joseph Koch's (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) two-point gave St. Thomas a 18-7 lead and was his 20th point scored against the Wildcats. Peipert added a 1-yard touchdown run, and, after a fourth-down stop, a 19-yard touchdown pass to McCrary before Hoiland closed the scoring with a 28-yard field goal as time expired. The defense finished the second quarter with four sacks, an interception, and a fourth-down stop as the Tommies went into halftime ahead 35-7.

Third Quarter: St. Thomas played Davidson to a scoreless third quarter, forcing punts on the Wildcats' first two possessions. Sam Shaughnessy (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) added a third-down tackle for loss, and Charlie Boucher (Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) recorded a sack later in the quarter to provide defensive highlights. Offensively, Noah Long's (Liberty Hill, Texas / Liberty Hill) 32-yard run was the biggest gain of the quarter for the Tommies, and Peipert later pinned Davidson at its own 4 with a 36-yard punt. The Wildcats converted a fourth-and-1 on its final drive and reached the St. Thomas 28 as the quarter ended, with the Tommies ahead 35-7.

Fourth Quarter: St. Thomas' defense kept the Davidson off the board in the fourth quarter, forcing turnovers on downs at the Tommie 21-yard line with 12:41 left. The St. Thomas offense followed the second stop with a 55-yard drive that ran out the clock. Anthony Policare (Endwell, N.Y. / Maine-Endwell) converted two first downs on the ground. To secure the 35-7 win for the Tommies.

TOMMIE TIDBITS

  • Peipert threw for 257 yards and rushed for 116 in the win, yet another performance with more than 300 yards of total offense for the redshirt freshman. Since the loss to Presbyterian on Oct. 3, Peipert has thrown for more than 200 yards twice with more than 100 rushing yards against Stetson and Davidson.
  • St. Thomas improved to 3-0 all-time in the Glenn Caruso era when playing on Halloween and earned its first Halloween win of the Division I era. It was the Tommies first Halloween game since the 2015 season.

UP NEXT:
Up next, St. Thomas travels to Butler for another key PFL showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 7 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
