10/2/2026 8:44:00 PM | Women's Hockey

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of St. Thomas women's hockey dropped a close battler to #2 Ohio State 5-2 on Friday. After a scoreless first period, the Tommies allowed four second-period goals and were outshot 40-19. Junior goalie Dani Strom (Dayton, Minn. / Maple Grove) tallied her 1,000th career save on the first Buckeye shot of the game. The junior entered Friday's contest with 999 saves to her name in just two seasons at St. Thomas.

The Tommies had early looks from Jenessa Gazdik (Somerset, Wis. / Gentry Academy), Josie Skoogman (St. Paul, Minn. / Hill-Murray) and Maya Engler (Andover, Minn. / Andover), but. Buckeye netminder Taylor Kressin saved each attempt to keep the first period scoreless. Ohio State carried much of the middle stretch with repeated shots and traffic, while Strom stopped attempts by Sanni Vanhanen, Hayley McDonald, Maxine Cimoroni, Mira Jungåker, and Vanhanen again. St. Thomas' defense also came up with several key blocks to keep things scoreless, allowing the Tommies to create late chances. Ellie Stewart (Minnetonka, Minn. / Shattuck-St. Mary's) had a chance to give St. Thomas the early lead, but her shot was saved at 4:15. Ohio State pressed again in the final minutes, but the Tommies blocked four attempts in the last 3:30 and Strom stopped Rylee Bartz at 0:00 as the period ended scoreless.

The Tommies blocked three Ohio State attempts in the opening minute, but Joy Dunne scored at 18:17 off assists from Mira Jungåker and Jocelyn Amos to put Ohio State ahead 1-0. After the Tommies' first power play expired and Strom made several saves during the Buckeye advantage, Hilda Svensson scored at 9:07 with assists from Dunne and Jungåker to make it 2-0. St. Thomas cut the deficit at 5:03 when Sydney Bryant (Traverse City, Mich. / Skyline) scored at even strength off a Stewart assist. It was Bryant's first career goal with St. Thomas after joining the team in the offseason. Ohio State moved back ahead by two on Kate Viel's goal at 3:49, and Dunne scored again with 10 seconds left to send the Buckeyes into the second intermission up 4-1.

Strom kept the Tommies steady through stretches of Ohio State chances early in the third, making saves on Jenna Raunio, Hilda Svensson and Jordan Baxter before the Tommies generated looks from Cara Sajevic (Shoreview, Minn. / Gentry Academy), Ella Boerger (Andover, Minn. / Andover) and Stewart. The Buckeyes continued to put pucks on net through the middle of the period, and Sanni Vanhanen scored unassisted at 4:37 to make it 5-1. Sajevic answered for the Tommies at 1:33, finishing an even-strength goal with assists from Whitney Horton (Edina, Minn. / Edina) and Boerger to bring the score to 5-2. Thanks to her third-period goal, Sajevic extended her point streak to three consecutive games. After a late JuliAnna Gazdik (Somerset, Wis. / Gentry Academy) penalty put Ohio State on the power play, Strom made four saves in the final 25 seconds and Cailin Mumm (Andover, Minn. / Andover) blocked a last shot as the game ended with Ohio State ahead 5-2.
