Tommies battle South Dakota, honor seniors

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas swim and dive programs return to the pool after their month-long hiatus. The Tommies hosted Summit League foe South Dakota in a two-day dual at Anderson Pool and the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex (AARC). After two days of strong competition, St. Thomas came up just short, as South Dakota won both the men's and women's duals by scores of 165-135 and 157-143.
 
Of note: Friday's relays and diving events were not scored.
 
WOMEN'S RESULTS: ST. THOMAS vs. SOUTH DAKOTA
The Tommie women impressed in the pool Friday and Saturday, with multiple individual wins and PR times over the course of the weekend.
  • St. Thomas "A" team won the 200 medley relay, the first event of the morning. The team of Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis. / Cambridge), Amber Hess (Kohler, Wis. / Kohler), Brooke Gothard (Golden, Colo. / Wheat Ridge) and Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) won the relay with a time of 1:47.22.  
  • Members of that relay team also won individual races Saturday morning and afternoon. Undem won both the 50 and 100 free races, clocking times of 24.48 and 53.14 respectively
  • Davis and Gothard also won individual races after the 200 medley relay. Gothard won the 50 breaststroke with a time of 30.92 and the 100 IM with a time of 1:00.72. She also finished second in the 100 with a time of 1:07.78.
  • Davis won the 50 and 100 backstroke with times of 26.57 and 56.56 respectively.
  • Mary Selden (Davenport, Iowa / Central) earned two top-3 finishes in the pool as an individual. The sophomore finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.87 and third in the 100 with a time of 54.29.
  • Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Central) continued to be the top distance swimmer for the Tommies. The junior won the 500 free by two full seconds thanks to her time of 5:16.54 and finished third in the 1000 free with a time of 10:57.46.
  • On the boards, Maya Kelly (Lake Elmo, Minn. / Stillwater) won the 1-meter competition with a score of 224.70. Kelly would finish third in 3-meter with a score of 239.10.
  • St. Thomas also won the final race of the day, the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Undem, Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation), Hess and Selden swam the fastest time in the pool of 1:37.47 in the event.
  • Several other St. Thomas swimmers and divers earned top finishes Saturday. Click here for full results.
MEN'S RESULTS: ST. THOMAS vs. SOUTH DAKOTA
St. Thomas opened 2026 with several strong performances in Anderson Pool, winning multiple individual races and events Friday and Saturday.
  • The Tommie "A" team took second in the opening event of the day, the 200 medley relay. The team of Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings), Ian Leonard (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego), Nicholas Salido (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst) and Carter Fask (Elmhurst, Ill. / Fenwick) claimed second in the race with a time of 1:33.40.
  • Leonard and Salido won individual races for St. Thomas later in the day. Salido won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.60, beating teammate John Trosper (Clive, Iowa / Waukee), who finished second with a time of 51.29.
  • Leonard won the 50 breaststroke with a time of 26.70 and finished second in the 100 with a time of 58.24.
  • Jensen earned an individual win in the 100 backstroke in dramatic fashion, out touching Joaquin Contreras-Fallico at the wall to win with a time of 57.36. The senior finished second in the 50 with a time of 23.94.
  • Dani Mauri (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato West) won his first individual race as a Tommie, clocking a PR time of 21.62 to win the 50 freestyle. Fask finished second with a time of 21.68.
  • Jensen Richard (Rochester, Minn. / Century) won the final individual race of the day, the 100 IM. He and Trosper went 1-2 in the race with times of 53.56 and 53.60 respectively.
  • The St. Thomas "A" team of Fask, Jensen, Lucas Becker (Carver, Minn. / Chanhassen) and Salido finished second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.04.
  • On the boards, Julius Krumenacher (Waukesha, Wis. / North) won the 1-meter competition with a score of 287.20. Austin Kantor (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) was the top finisher in the 3-meter event with a score of 260.30.
  • Several other St. Thomas swimmers and divers earned top finishes Saturday. Click here for full results.
UP NEXT
St. Thomas will return to the pool on Saturday, January 10. The Tommies will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to compete in a triangular with Northern Iowa and Iowa State. The triangular is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. CT.
