Men’s Hockey wins program-best ninth in a row

Tommies scored six unanswered in 7-4 victory over Lake Superior State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – St. Thomas men's hockey (15-7-3, 12-3-2) did it again on Friday night by coming back from down three goals to defeat Lake Superior State (9-15-1, 6-11-0), 7-4 north of the border at GFL Gardens. Leon Hayward served as acting head coach for the Tommies after it was announced that Rico Blasi would miss the weekend series due to illness.

A pair of Tommies scored two goals, three Tommies finished with three points, and Aaron Trotter got the win between the pipes with 20 saves on 21 shots after coming on in relief.

Lake State took the lead at 1:54 on its second shot of the game. Bauer Berry scored his second of the season at 5:04 from Dylan Godbout and Charlie Schoen. The Lakers answered back with goals at 8:07 and 8:33 to chase the Tommies' starting netminder from the game. Trotter made four saves in the first period before allowing the lone goal of his appearance at 5:05.

It was all Tommies after that with two goals from Jake Braccini at 6:12 on the power play and 8:21 to bring the game to within one at the second intermission. Lucas Van Vliet assisted on both Braccini goals and Godbout added his second of the night on the Toms' third tally.

The reigning CCHA Rookie of the Week tied the game just 13 seconds into the final frame. The goal was Van Vliet's 10th of the season making him the fourth Tommie to reach double digits. Nathan Pilling and Berry got the helpers on the game-tying goal.

Next it was Charlie Schoen's turn to shine with the game-winning goal at 7:30 from Mason Poolman and Cole Miller, and then with one of the prettiest goals of the season at 10:36 from Pilling and Hayes Hundley. Schoen deked through multiple defenders before sending home the dagger, his third of the season.

Nathan Pilling's empty net goal at 18:47 from Lucas Wahlin and Alex Gaffney extended the Tommie captain's team-leading point streak to nine games. During that stretch the Purple are 9-0-0 for their longest win streak in DI program history.

The Tommies outshot the Lakers 41-28, they were 1-3 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill without allowing a shot on goal.
