ST. PAUL, MINN.  – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team is back to its winning ways. The Tommies used balanced scoring, timely defensive stops and a strong third quarter to earn an 81-68 road victory over Omaha on Thursday evening at Baxter Arena. St. Thomas led for more than 35 minutes of game time and placed five players in double figures, shooting 46.9% from the field while forcing 19 Maverick turnovers.

With the win, the Tommies are now 9-9 overall and 2-2 in Summit League play.

QUICK HITS:
  • Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) led St. Thomas in scoring, wracking up 17 points on 6-12 shooting.
  • Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) was once again a rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 15 points with nine rebounds. She also tallied a career-high eight assists and six steals.
  • Autumn McCall (Blaine, Minn. / Centennial) added 12 points on 5-5 shooting off the bench.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: St. Thomas jumped out to an early lead behind its transition offense, scoring six fast-break points in the opening five minutes. Sand sparked the Tommies with multiple finishes in the paint, while Laura Hauge (West St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) connected on an early three-pointer to help St. Thomas build a four-point advantage. Omaha countered with perimeter shooting, but the Tommies closed the quarter on a late basket to take a 20-19 lead after one.

Second Quarter: St. Thomas found its rhythm offensively in the second quarter, as the Tommies shot 63.6% from the field. McCall scored seven points in the period, including a momentum-shifting three-pointer, while Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Area) added a triple during a 7-0 St. Thomas run. The Tommies also capitalized at the free-throw line, closing the half on a strong finish to take a 41-34 advantage into the break.

Third Quarter: St. Thomas took control of the game in the third quarter with its defense, holding Omaha to just 11 points. A 9-2 Tommie run early in the period stretched the lead to double digits, highlighted by a three-pointer from Feuerbach and strong interior defense from Sand. The Tommies forced seven turnovers in the quarter and outscored Omaha 20-11 to push the margin to 61-45 entering the final 10 minutes.

Fourth Quarter: Omaha attempted to rally behind late perimeter shooting, but St. Thomas answered every push. McCall knocked down a three-pointer early in the fourth, and Abbey Vallance (Sydney, Australia / Tara Anglican School) added a timely triple during a 9-0 Tommie run that pushed the lead to as many as 20 points. St. Thomas sealed the win at the free-throw line, finishing the game shooting 80.6% from the stripe.
