Tommies comeback comes up short vs. South Dakota

1/10/2026 7:02:00 PM | Women's Basketball

ST. PAUL, MINN.  – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team came up short in Saturday's Summit League contest against South Dakota. Trailing 33-22 at the half, the Tommies mounted a furious comeback against the University of South Dakota, scoring 26 third quarter points to whittle the Coyote lead to 53-48. However, St. Thomas was unable to leave Schoenecker Arena at the victory, falling by a final score of 72-63. With the loss, the Tommies are now 8-9 overall and 1-2 in Summit League play.

QUICK HITS:
  • Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) and Savannah McGowan (Plymouth, Minn. / Armstrong) were both a rebound shy of a double-double Saturday afternoon. Sand closed the game with 12 points and nine rebounds, while McGowan closed with 10 points and nine rebounds. Sand also tied her career-high with four blocks.
  • Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Area) led St. Thomas with 13 points and seven assists on Saturday.
  • Kammie Ludwig (Geneseo, Ill. / Geneseo) scored eight points on 2-3 shooting from beyond the arc.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: South Dakota opened the game with an early run, building an eight-point advantage midway through the quarter. St. Thomas responded behind interior scoring from Hood and Mikayla Werner (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville), as Hood paced the Tommies offense with six points in the first quarter. However, the South Dakota defense was stifling, as the Coyotes held the Tommies to 10 points in the opening frame to build an 18-10 lead.

Second Quarter: The Tommies settled in offensively in the second, highlighted by a three-pointer from Ludwig and fast-break finishes from Abbey Vallance (Sydney, Australia / Tara Anglican School) and McGowan. St. Thomas trimmed the deficit late in the quarter, but South Dakota maintained a 33-22 lead at halftime.

Third Quarter: St. Thomas delivered its strongest stretch of the game out of the break, outscoring the Coyotes 26–20 in the third. Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) provided a much-needed spark to start the second half with a big three pointer at the top of the key, as did McGowan. These plays, combined with strong play from Hood and Sand, allowed the Tommies to cut the deficit to 53-48 by the end of the third.

Fourth Quarter: The Tommies continued to push in the final quarter, but the Coyotes combination of Angelina Robles and Molly Joyce proved too much in the end. St. Thomas kept the game within single digits for much of the quarter, but South Dakota sealed the contest at the line down the stretch, winning by a final score of 72-65.

UP NEXT:
The Tommies will hit the road for their next Summit League contests. St. Thomas will travel to Omaha, Nebraska for a Thursday tilt with the Mavericks. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15.
