Trailblazers and Blue Demons on tap for week two

The Tommies look to continue their roll to begin the 2025 season
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Tommie Men's Soccer (1-0-1) finished off a pair of shutouts to cap off a successful start to the 2025 season. They are back in action with a home match against the Utah Tech Trailblazers (0-0-2) on Thursday, August 27 at noon and a road game against the DePaul Blue Demons (0-0-2) on Sunday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m.
The Toms have never matched up with the Trailblazers of the Western Athletic Conference. They are 0-1-1 against the Blue Demons, tying the last time out in 2024 at South Field, 1-1. Faris Colic scored the lone goal for the Purple, and Moritz Krenc got the result between the posts with four saves.

Weekly Recap
The Tommies opened their 2025 season with a pair of shutouts, starting with a scoreless draw at home against Presbyterian before erupting for a 4-0 road victory at Chicago State.
The Tommies created numerous chances in the opener—hitting the post twice, having a goal called back for offside, and forcing multiple goal-line blocks. Goalkeeper Moritz Krenc turned away four shots for his second career clean sheet.
On Sunday in Chicago, three Tommies netted their first career Tommie goals as part of the program's largest Division I victory. Mathis Guffroy opened the scoring in the 13th minute before Yanis Lakhlifi converted a penalty and added a second strike just three minutes later. Kevin Sliva, in his 21st career match, secured his first goal in the 58th minute to cap the 4-0 result. Krenc made two saves for his third career shutout, marking the first back-to-back clean sheets since 2021.

-Transfer from Texas Wesleyan (NAIA) where he tallied 47 career goals and 27 assists
-2024 NAIA All-American, 2024 Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Year, 2024 All-SAC First Team
-Led the SAC with 19 goals and 13 assists in 2024
Moritz Krenc – Defensive Player to Watch
-Made 27 starts between the pipes for the Tommies in two seasons, including all 16 in 2024
-Led all Summit League goalkeepers with 91 saves and a 5.7 saves per game average in 2024
-Registered a career-high 10 saves against Oral Roberts on October 12
Preseason Poll
The Denver Pioneers were picked to finish first in the preseason coaches' poll by Summit League head coaches. The Pioneers were ranked No. 3 in the USC Preseason Poll and No. 4 in the Top-Drawer Soccer Preseason Poll. They were the No. 3 national seed a season ago and advanced t the College Cup for the second time in program history.
Reigning tournament champion Kansas City was tabbed to finish second after collecting one first-place vote and registering 30 overall points. The Roos made the program's deepest run in the 2024 postseason, advancing to the third round and were ranked No. 18 in the USC preseason poll and No. 13 in the Top Drawer poll.
UMass, who is one of two new affiliate members for 2025, was selected to finish third with 28 points and claimed the remaining first-place vote. The Minutemen, who tied for third in the Atlantic 10 regular season in 2024, advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals a season ago after earning and at-large bid.
The Tommies earned six points and were picked to finish last of the seven schools in the Summit League this season.
Scouting the Trailblazers
Utah Tech is headed by ninth-year skipper, Jonny Broadhead. Since becoming head coach in 2017, his Trailblazers have finished at or above .500 three times, in 2017, 2019, and 2023. They are coming off a 4-10-4 (3-4-2) record in 2024 where they finished sixth in the WAC. Their conference was home to a pair of top 100 teams in 2024, Seattle U (52) and San Diego State (56).
They are 0-0-2 to begin this season with a pair of 1-1 ties against Gonzaga and Sacramento State. They played the Zags at home and came from behind to tie the game in the 66th minute three minutes after Gonzaga scored. Tanner Dutra scored from Colby Lee. Their goaltender, Stockton Short made five saves. Their game against Sac State was similar, with a game-tying goal in the 80th minute after their opposition had scored just over three minutes prior. Brandon Khedoo scored from Andre Saucedo and Colby Lee. Short made five saves in net once again.
Tanner Dutra, Colby Lee, and Anthony Godinez have all played 180 minutes in two games in 2025. Stockton Short was named WAC Preseason Goaltender of the Year after leading the nation with 105 saves in 2024 (Moritz Krenc made 91 saves). Short also played in all 1,620 minutes in 18 games last season.
