St. Thomas Women’s Soccer Opens 2025 Season with two road matchups

The Tommies will take on Viterbo and Minnesota on the road
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Thomas women's soccer is set to open the 2025 season and is entering the fifth season of the Division 1 era. This season will be the first that the Tommies are eligible for tournament play due to the recent reclassification.
Coach Sheila McGill and the Tommies will hit the road to square off against Viterbo Aug. 14 at 4 p.m. and Minnestoa Aug. 17 at 7 p.m..
Purple Progress
Head coach Sheila McGill is entering her 19th season at the helm of the program. The Tommies finished with a 5-9-3 in 2024, a two win improvement from 2023.
The Tommies averaged 1.12 goals per game, 13 shots per game, and a .086 shot percentage and are looking to make another jump forward in 2025.
St. Thomas in the Polls
The Tommies are picked to finish seventh out of the nine teams in the Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll after their 1-5-2 conference record in 2024.
The regular-season conference champions North Dakota State were voted to the top of the poll, narrowly beating out number two South Dakota State (60 to 59). The Purple finished with 22 votes placing them above North Dakota (16) and Kansas City (10).
Both Tatum Trettel, and Olivia Rowe were named Players to Watch by the conference office.
Trettel played in 16 matches in 2024, making six starts and tallying 715 minutes. She scored three goals, adding one assist for seven points.
Rowe played in 13 games, making 12 starts in 2024. She recorded 72 saves with a .735 save percentage.
Scouting the V-Hawks
The Viterbo V-Hawks are led by 17 year head coach Scott Pirnstill. The V-Hawks posted a 8-9-1 overall record as a member of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC), a NAIA affiliate.
Viterbo returns one of their top goal scorers Evelyn Shaw from the 2024 season. Shaw scored 5 goals along with 2 assists for 12 points.
The Tommies faced the V-Hawks for the first time during the 2024 season where they picked up a 6-0 victory at home. Returners Melina Knowles and Tatum Trettel both had unassisted goals in that contest.
Scouting the Gophers
The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers are led by head coach Erin Chastain who is entering her fifth season at the helm of the program.
The Gophers posted a 14-5-3 record during the 2024 season, finishing seventh in the Big Ten. Minnesota is currently ranked No.24 in United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll.
The Gophers return red-shirt sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Martin, who started all 22 games and recorded a .714 save percentage along with 60 saves.
Former Tommie Mariah Nguyen, is playing her final season at Minnesota after spending three seasons in purple. Nguyen tallied 9 goals and 4 assists for 22 points during her Tommie career.
The Tommies and Gophers have met twice before, Minnesota coming away victorious both times. The Purple avoided being shut out for the second consecutive year but fell 4-1 during the most recent meeting in 2024.
