St. Thomas Softball sweeps Green Bay in dominant fashion

4/15/2025 7:31:00 PM | Softball

The Tommies have won seven consecutive games over the Phoenix

ST. PAUL, Minn. – St. Thomas Softball (23-16 overall, 6-3 Summit League) continued its impeccable season with a pair of dominant wins over the Green Bay Phoenix (9-25 overall, 2-13 Horizon League) on Tuesday afternoon at South Field. The Tommies took game one, 9-0 in five innings and game two, 9-3.

Game One Recap
The Purple took game one by the reigns and never relinquished with a six run first, three run second, and a complete game shutout from Christina Crawford. It was Crawford's second complete game shutout of the season and the eighth for Tommie pitchers.

Cassidy Carby got the party started with a two-run double to score Avery Wukawitz and Laken Lienhard after Crawford struck out two and worked around a two out double in the top half. Jenna Kuhn single Carby to third in the first start of her season. Kyllie Weingart came in to pinch run for Kuhn and broke for second to draw a throw from the Green Bay catcher. She did, successfully got caught in a rundown to allow Carby to steal home, and then worked her way out of the pickle to get back to first safely.

Kaitlyn Raymond singled Weingart to third and then stole second. Abbi Stierlen brought Weingart home on a groundout to the third baseman. Adrianna Young followed up with a single to place runners on the corners once again. Grace Nosan recorded her second hit of the season to score Raymond and then Ruby Moore scored the sixth run with a sacrifice fly.

Crawford struck out two more in a three-up, three-down top of the second. The Tommies' bats went to work and scored three runs with two outs. Kuhn got the two-out rally started with her second single of the game and exited for another pinch runner, Marleigh Louvar. Raymond reached on a single and both then advanced on a wild pitch. Abbi Stierlen doubled the two home and Young brought home Stierlen for a nine-run Tommie lead.

The Purple's senior starter did not relent. She struck out eight batters, allowed just two hits, and did not issue a single walk in one of the best starts of her career. She worked a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth to snuff out the Phoenix.

Game Two Recap
Green Bay responded with the first run of the game in the latter half of the doubleheader against St. Thomas starter, Ella Cook. Cook worked into the sixth inning and allowed one earned run, six hits, and two walks with five strikeouts (all looking) to win her ninth game of 2025.

The Tommies got the lead right back in the bottom of the second after Abbi Stierlen tied the ballgame with her first home run of the season. Ruby Moore singled home Zoe Trotter followed by a Laken Lienhard RBI single, 3-1 Tommies.

Stierlen earned a second RBI with a walk in the bottom of the third. Kameron Monson unloaded the bases with her second triple in her last three games to break open the game, 7-1. Trotter brought Monson home one pitch later and then scored on a throwing error by the Green Bay catcher.

The Phoenix staved off their second run-rule defeat in a row after an untimely Tommie error allowed one run to cross in the top of the fifth. Cook's outing came to an end after she walked the leadoff hitter in the sixth. Keira Murphy took over and pitched two innings with one run allowed on three hits.

The Purple won their 23rd of the season on a fly ball to right field that landed in the glove of Morgan Klein
