Early scoring lifts the Tommies to win against the Mavericks
OMAHA, Neb. – St. Thomas baseball continued its opening conference series at Omaha, facing the Mavericks in game two of the three-game series. Scoring early, the Tommies (8-6 overall, 2-0 Summit) held their lead through the entirety of the game, defeating Omaha (5-12 overall, 0-2 Summit) at Tal Anderson Field.
St. Thomas was the first on the board once again in game two, adding a run in both the first and second inning. Omaha tallied its first run in the third, cutting the Purple's lead in half.
After a scoreless fourth frame, the Tommies posted a run in the fifth and sixth to extend their lead to 4-1.
Omaha added two runs in the bottom of the eighth frame, once again making it a one-run game.
Holding onto the lead in the bottom of the ninth, St. Thomas picked up its second win of the weekend, defeating the Mavericks 4-3.
Zan Von Schlegell recorded two hits and two runs against Omaha.
Walker Retz (1-0) totaled four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one run, posting five strikeouts over 5.0 innings on Saturday.
Zak Endres and Max Skilbeck combined for five strikeouts against the Mavericks.
