Baseball opens conference play with 21-11 win over Omaha

Tommies score 21 runs for the second time in the DI-era

OMAHA, Neb. –   St. Thomas baseball opened conference play at Omaha, facing the Mavericks in game one of the three-game series. The Tommies (7-6 overall, 1-0 Summit) scored in all but one inning, led by a seven-run third frame, to lift St. Thomas to a 21-11 win over Omaha (5-11 overall, 0-1 Summit).
 
St. Thomas opened scoring in the series opener, tallying one run in the top of the first frame. Omaha tied the game in the second, however it was a dominant St. Thomas performance for the remainder of the contest.
 
Eight hits, including five doubles, led the Tommies to a seven-run third frame to extend their lead to 8-1.
 
St. Thomas added four runs between the fourth and fifth frame, adding to its lead.  
 
Brigs Richartz and Ben Vujovich tallied home runs in the sixth frame, as the Tommies held the 16-4 advantage through six frames.
 
The Tommies recorded five runs in the seventh, bringing their total to 21 runs scored. Omaha posted a seven-run bottom of the inning, but the Tommies held on to win 21-11.
 
Marcus Kruzan (2-0) and Bryce Leedle combined for seven strikeouts against the Mavericks.
 
Ben Moser made his first collegiate appearance on the mound, tallying one strikeout.
 
TOMMIE TIDBITS
  • The Purple's 21-11 win is the third time in the DI-era the Tommies have posted 20+ runs, and the second time the Purple have recorded 21 runs.
  • Every Tommie in the starting lineup recorded a hit in today's game, as all but one tallied an RBI.
  • Zan Von Schlegell tallied four hits, as Matthew Maulik, Joe Vos, and Ben Vujovich each posted three against Omaha.
  • Brigs Richartz and Ben Vujovich each tallied a home run in the sixth frame, as the duo combined for nine RBI.
  • Marcus Kruzan posted four strikeouts and three scoreless frames in 5.0 innings of work, picking up his second win of the season.
