The Tommies came from behind to take down the Detroit Mercy Titans 3-1
CHICAGO, Ill. – St. Thomas Softball (4-1 overall) concluded its best weekend to start a season in program history with a walk off win against the Detroit Mercy Titans (0-4) on Sunday at The Dome to wrap up the DePaul Dome Tournament.
Recap
Christina Crawford took the circle for the Tommies in the top of the first inning against Detroit Mercy. She tossed a flawless frame with one of her four strikeouts against the Titans. St. Thomas' red hot offense got off to a fast start with two singles and a walk in the bottom of the inning but could not capitalize for a run.
After a scoreless second, Detroit scored the game's first run in the top of the third. They led off with a double, that runner then advanced to third on a passed ball. Crawford got one batter with a punch out and then allowed a walk. The next Titan grounded out to shortstop to score the run. The Tommies worked out of the inning down just the lone run.
St. Thomas left three runners on base in the bottom of the third and finally broke through to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth with a Kaitlyn Raymond RBI single to score Anna Caruso.
Crawford held her team in the game, tossing six innings without allowing an earned run and allowing just six base runners. Ella Cook came into the game in the top of the seventh and tossed a 1-2-3 frame with two strikeouts, she earned the win in relief.
Kaitlyn Raymond led the bottom of the seventh off with a walk (her third time reaching base safely in the game). Ruby Moore did her job and bunted Raymond to second. That gave Cassidy Carby a chance to tie the game with a runner in scoring position and one out. The power-hitting third baseman opted to promptly end the game with a moonshot to left center field.
Carby's first home run of the season gave St. Thomas a 3-1 win and its best start to a campaign in program history. It took the Tommies until their 25th contest to win four games last season, they have done it in five games this year.
