Sibell stops 57, Wahlin scores two in win over Falcons

Jake Sibell broke the program record for saves in a single game by 12

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (12-13-5 overall, 9-9-4 CCHA) won the night and the season series against the Bowling Green Falcons (15-10-4, 11-7-4) behind Jake Sibell's record breaking 57 saves and Lucas Wahlin's two goals on Saturday night at Slater Ice Arena.

Lucas Wahlin scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season from Chase Foley, Cooper Gay, and Grant Docter. Jake Sibell started his first game since 1/17 and put together a historic 57 save performance for his fifth win of the season.

Recap
The story was Jake Sibell. The senior netminder was up to every task he faced on Saturday night. He stopped 24 shots in the first period to keep his team, that was outshot by 20 in the frame, in the game.

Sibell made 17 more saves in the second period and was granted some breathing room by Lucas Wahlin on the power play at 0:40. The Toms' only power play of the game was sandwiched around the end of the first and beginning of the second. Wahlin won the opening faceoff of the period to allow the CCHA's best power play unit to set up.

Chase Foley ripped a shot that was saved by Bowling Green goaltender Cole Moore. The puck rebounded out and Cooper Gay shoveled it back to Foley in the high slot. Foley sent it back in and the puck bounced onto Wahlin's stick and within the blink of an eye, the captain slapped it into the back of the net.

St. Thomas and Sibell killed off one penalty in the second as the senior headed into the second intermission with 42 saves, three shy of the program record.

Wahlin added his second goal of the game at 8:16 of the third from Grant Docter. Docter blocked a shot and sprung Wahlin with a stretch pass through the neutral zone. Wahlin had all the time in the world to beat the goalie and did so, short side.

The Falcons scored their only goal of the game on their 45th shot at 10:47 on the power play.

Jake Sibell made four saves in the final minute while facing an extra attacker to bring his tally up to 57 for the game. Lucas Wahlin also blocked a shot that dented his face-mask at 19:03.

Bowling Green outshot the Tommies 58-21 and won 44 of the 71 faceoffs.
