Sibell shuts out Northern Michigan

2/21/2025 8:31:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Sibell recorded the first shutout of his career in 3-0 win

MARQUETTE, Mich. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (13-13-5 overall, 10-9-4 CCHA) shutout the Northern Michigan Wildcats (5-25-1, 4-18-1) by a score of three goals to none on Friday night at Berry Events Center.

Jake Sibell finished off the first shutout of his collegiate career with 20 saves between the pipes. He was given some wiggle room after two first period goals from Grant Docter (1) and Matthew Gleason (10). Lucas Wahlin (13) locked up the victory with an empty net goal in the third period. Wahlin and Liam Malmquist each recorded two point games.

Recap
The Tommies controlled the first period both on the scoreboard and off. They recorded the first five shots on goal and ended up with 17 total in the period. Northern Michigan did not put a shot on goal until nearly the sixth minute of the game and, despite two grade-A chances, could not get a puck by Jake Sibell

Grant Docter scored the first goal of the game (and his season) at 8:32. Caige Sterzer won a board battle on the right half-wall and peddled the puck back to Ethan Elias. The freshman defenseman passed the puck to his d-partner Docter at the near point. Docter shot it off the blocker of Northern Michigan goaltender, Ryan Ouellette. The puck ricocheted hard off the back wall glass, hit Ouellette in the back, and then bounced over the goal line. A fortuitous bounce and a Tommie lead, 1-0.

St. Thomas struck again at 16:28 in more traditional fashion. Liam Malmquist and Lucas Wahlin began a rush and passed the puck to Gleason in the low slot from below the goal line. One of Northern Michigan's defenseman lost sight of the puck at his skates long enough for Gleason to find it and rip a shot over the goaltender's right shoulder. The tally was Gleason's 10th of the season, a new career best.

The second period came and went with no goals. St. Thomas was granted two separate power play chances at 9:31 and 12:26 but mustered just two shots on net between the four minutes of advantage. The Toms out shot the Wildcats 13-6 and won 13 of the 19 face offs.

Northern Michigan had a chance to get one goal back with their only power play of the game at 3:42 in the third but did not capitalize. As was the theme of the entire game for the Wildcats, including the third.

Lucas Wahlin locked up the contest with an empty-net goal at 19:17 from Chase Foley and Liam Malmquist

Jake Sibell did not have to work as hard as he did in his 57-save performance against Bowling Green his last time out, but he did something tonight he had never done before, kept the puck out of the net for the full 60. He faced eight shots in the first, six in the second, and six in the third.

The Toms won the shots-on-goal battle 38-20 and won 31 of the 55 face offs. Their defense played impeccably with 15 blocked shots.

Up Next
The Tommies complete their final road series of the regular season against the Northern Michigan Wildcats tomorrow night. The puck is scheduled to drop at 5:07 central. The Tommies have won five of their last six against the Wildcats and hold the edge in the all-time series 5-4.
