Men’s Hockey outlasts Northern Michigan

The Tommies completed their first conference road sweep of the season with 4-3 win
MARQUETTE, Mich. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (14-13-5 overall, 11-9-4 CCHA) jumped out in front of Northern Michigan (5-26-1, 4-19-1) and outlasted them despite a late comeback on Saturday night at Berry Events Center. The Toms completed their first conference road sweep of the season with their 4-3 win.
Liam Malmquist (13), Ryan O'Neill (5), Jake Braccini (8), and Lucas Wahlin (14) all got in on the scoring. Malmquist and O'Neill each recorded two-point games while Wahlin led the way with three. Jake Sibell won his seventh consecutive start with 21 saves on 24 shots. St. Thomas was 1-1 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.

After a two-point night on Friday, Liam Malmquist got involved almost immediately on Saturday with a goal off a rebound in the low slot at 3:47. Assisting on the play were his top line mates, Matthew Gleason and Lucas Wahlin. The Tommies climbed to 12-6-3 this season when scoring first after their two wins against Northern.
St. Thomas took advantage of its only power play opportunity of the night with an absolute rocket on a one-time shot from Ryan O'Neill. Malmquist and Wahlin got in with the assists on the power play tally.
Jake Braccini opened up the second with a goal at 5:21 from O'Neill. It was Braccini's eighth of the season and seventh since the calendar flipped to 2025 (14 games). Northern Michigan answered with their first goal on the power play at 13:01 in the second.
The Purple's captain Lucas Wahlin answered with his second goal of the weekend and fourth in his last three games at 18:26 from Ethan Elias and Caige Sterzer. Walhin has recorded 13 points in his last 14 games and has a new career high 33 this season.
The Wildcats made it a game late with goals at 7:17 and 10:21 in the third period. They made it even tighter with a late-game power play during the final minute. Jake Sibell and the Tommies fought off the 6-on-4 surge to secure the win.
St. Thomas out shot Northern Michigan 34 to 24. Both sides won 32 face offs.

The Tommies control their own destiny against the Michigan Tech Huskies next weekend at Saint Thomas Ice Arena. The Toms head into the final weekend of the regular season trailing the Huskies by just two points for the honor of hosting a CCHA Quarterfinal. The deciding games will be on Friday, February 28 at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday, March 1 at 6:07 p.m.
