KANSAS CITY, MO. – As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. The University of St. Thomas unfortunately found itself on the receiving end of that adage Thursday afternoon. The Tommies saw their three game win streak snapped by Kansas City, falling to the Roos by a final score of 91-82. With the loss, St. Thomas is now 15-11 overall and 7-6 in Summit League play.
RECAP:
Defense was not necessarily the highlight of the first quarter for either team, but offense certainly was. The Tommies and Roos scored a combined 48 points in the opening 10 minutes of play, with Kansas City holding a 26-22 advantage over St. Thomas after the first quarter. Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) continued to be the catalyst of the Tommies offense in Kansas City, scoring 10 points in the first quarter alone thanks to a perfect shooting performance. Langbehn went 4-4 from the floor and 2-2 from the charity stripe, keeping St. Thomas within striking distance of the Roos.
However, Kansas City was lights out from the floor in the first quarter as well, shooting .625 against the Tommies typically stingy defense. While the Roos came back down to earth in the second, St. Thomas found itself without Langbehn, as she was tacked with her second foul early in the quarter. Even without Langbehn, though, the Tommies owned Kansas City, outscoring the Roos 24-15 to take a 46-41 halftime lead. Langbehn and Sammy Opichka (Green Bay, Wis. / Notre Dame Academy) were the top scorers for St. Thomas in the first half, scoring 16 and 10 points respectively.
Kansas City and the Tommies once again switched roles in the third quarter, with the Roos outscoring St. Thomas 7-2 in the opening two minutes to tie the game at 48-48. In fact, the Tommies struggled mightily against the Kansas City defense, falling behind 62-54 with 1:25 remaining in the third quarter. It was a run St. Thomas simply could not recover from. Though the Tommies pulled within 10 in the fourth quarter, they could not make up the double digit deficit, falling by a final score of 91-82.
