Baseball closes series with 7-5 win over New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, NM. – St. Thomas baseball completed its series against New Mexico State. Down by three runs through seven frames, the Tommies posted a five-run eighth inning to earn the comeback victory on Monday afternoon.

New Mexico State took the early lead in the final game of the series in Las Cruces. After scoring two runs in the opening frame, the Aggies held the advantage until the top of the eighth inning.

The home team extended their lead to 4-1 through four frames. After three scoreless innings, St. Thomas posted a five-run eighth to take the lead for the first time this game.

The Tommies held a 6-5 lead headed into the final frame of the series.

Joe Vos recorded a leadoff solo home run to open the ninth inning. Holding the two-run advantage, the Tommies earned their second win of the season at Presley Askew Field.

Matthew Maulik went 3-for-4 on Monday afternoon, totaling one RBI and scoring two runs.

In 5.0 innings, Walker Retz totaled five strikeouts and three scoreless frames in his first start of the season. In their second appearances of the weekend, Tucker Huhn, Zak Endres and Carl Cano (1-0) combined for six strikeouts against the Aggies.
