First half propels Tommies to 70-50 win over Drake

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team is rolling. The Tommies won their DI era record fifth straight game Saturday afternoon, downing Drake University 70-50 behind a 43-point first half. The Tommies held the Bulldogs to .297 shooting in Saturday's victory, allowing them to improve to 6-6 on the season.
QUICK HITS:
- Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Roseville Area) became the third St. Thomas player to score 20+ points this season, leading the game with 22. She shot .500 from beyond the arc, scoring 15 of her 22 points from three-point land. Hood also led the team with eight rebounds and five assists.
- Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) added 17 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and four steals in the win, leading the Tommies defensive charge.
- St. Thomas defense held Drake to 50 total points and a .297 field goal percentage, as the Bulldogs managed to convert just 22 shots total Saturday afternoon.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: The Tommies put together a strong first quarter, dominating on both ends of the floor to rush out to a 23-10 lead over the Bulldogs. As a team, St. Thomas recorded six steals and three blocks in the first quarter, while a balanced offensive attacked allowed the team to grab the early double-digit lead. Hood, Sand and Savannah McGowan (Plymouth, Minn. / Armstrong) all scored key baskets for the Tommies, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Second Quarter: St. Thomas' defense took center stage in the second quarter, as the team held Drake to just seven second quarter points. Offensively, the Tommies were on fire beyond the arc, as threes from Hood, Dan and Laura Hauge (West St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) helped St. Thomas extend its halftime lead to 43-17.
Third Quarter: Drake looked to whittle away at the Tommie lead in the second half, but the 26-point deficit proved to be too much to overcome. Sand continued to dominant in the paint for St. Thomas, as the offense matched the Bulldogs nearly point-for-point, giving the Tommies a 54-34 advantage after three quarters of play.
Fourth Quarter: The same held true for the fourth quarter, as St. Thomas matched the Bulldogs basket for basket. Hood scored six points in the final frame to cement the Tommies 70-50 victory.
