ST. PAUL, MINN. – It was a tightly contested battle between the University of St. Thomas and the University of Northern Iowa Sunday afternoon. Despite strong physical, defensive play, the Tommies saw their five-game win streak snapped, as the Panthers dealt them a 58-40 loss in Lee & Penny Anderson Arena. With the loss, St. Thomas is now 6-7 overall.
QUICK HITS:
- St. Thomas outscored UNI 27-23 in the first half and raced out to a 32-23 lead two minutes into the third quarter. Unfortunately, the Tommies would only score eight points in the final 18 minutes of regulation.
- Mikayla Werner (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) put together a perfect day on the floor, scoring nine points on 4-4 shooting, including a 1-1 mark from beyond the arc. She also added six rebounds, three assists, one steal and two blocks.
- Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) also added nine points, six rebounds, four steals and four blocks.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: Northern Iowa had control early in the ball game, jumping out to a 14-7 by the four-minute mark. The Tommies, though, had the last laugh, closing on an 8-0 run behind strong defensive pressure and second-chance opportunities. St. Thomas forced multiple UNI turnovers in the opening minutes and converted them into points, holding the Panthers to 14 first-quarter points and taking a 15-14 lead into the second quarter.
Second Quarter: St. Thomas continued to control the pace in the second quarter, limiting UNI to just nine points. A balanced offensive stretch, highlighted by inside scoring and transition buckets, allowed the Tommies to extend their lead to 27-23 by halftime. St. Thomas defense held the Panthers to just 30.4 percent shooting in the first half.
Third Quarter: The Tommies pushed their lead to as many as nine points midway through the quarter, their largest of the game, thanks to baskets by Jada Hood (St. Paul, Minn. / Rosemount Area) and Savannah McGowan (Plymouth, Minn. / Armstrong). However, Northern Iowa continued to trim the St. Thomas lead, though the Tommies still held a 36-34 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter: The Panthers took control in the fourth quarter, outscoring St. Thomas 24-4. UNI capitalized on turnovers and fast-break opportunities, pulling away as the Tommies struggled to find offensive rhythm late. After a late scoring surge, the Panthers left St. Paul with a 58-40 victory.
