ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team returned to Lee & Penny Anderson Arena Wednesday afternoon, looking for its first home "W" of the 2025-26 season. Despite a strong finish and several strong individual performances, the Tommies were toppled by Oakland University on Wednesday afternoon, falling 68–52. St. Thomas is now 1-6 this season.
QUICK HITS:
- Oakland led wire-to-wire, but St. Thomas remained within striking distance for much of the afternoon thanks to balanced scoring and timely defensive efforts. The Tommies held the Grizzlies to .286 shooting from beyond the arc, allowing just four made threes.
- Laura Hauge (West St. Paul, Minn. / St. Croix Lutheran) scored a career-high 12 points with three steals win the loss. Savannah McGowan (Plymouth, Minn. / Armstrong) added 12 points as well.
- Lydia Aalsma (Waupun, Wis. / Waupun) scored her first points as a Tommie, closing the game with five total.
SCORING SUMMARY:
First Quarter: St. Thomas opened with efficient shooting in the first quarter, scoring 15 points on six baskets, including made threes by Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) and Hauge. However, Oakland capitalized on second-chance opportunities to build a narrow 18-15 lead at the end of the first.
Second Quarter: Defense defined the second frame, with both teams limited to single-digit field goals. Late baskets by Alyssa Sand (Albany, Minn. / Albany) and Mikayla Werner (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) helped keep the Tommies within four at halftime, trailing 29-25.
Third Quarter: Oakland used its strongest shooting period to create separation in the third frame. A three from Aalsma and a late layup from McGowan highlighted the quarter for St. Thomas, but the Golden Grizzlies extended their lead to 49-35 heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter: The Tommies fought back with their highest-scoring quarter, fueled by baskets from Sand, McGowan, and a three-pointer by Feuerbach. While Oakland was limited to three shots in the entire quarter, the Golden Grizzlies secured their victory with free throws, making 13 total to seal the 68-52 win.
