Comeback bid falls short as Men’s Hockey earns one CCHA point

11/21/2025 10:59:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Two Tommie goals in the final four minutes by Lucas Wahlin and Alex Gaffney

ST. PAUL, Minn. – All night long, the Tommies (4-6-2 overall, 1-2-1 CCHA) out chanced the Bowling Green Falcons (5-3-3, 5-1-3) with a 38-20 shots-on-goal advantage, but failed to get enough by freshman goaltender, Jacob Steinman, who stopped a career-high 36 enroute to the overtime victory.

Lucas Wahlin scored with just over four minutes to play, and Alex Gaffney tied the game with four seconds left in regulation.

Period Summary

First Period
-The CCHA's top scoring offenses were each thwarted by the opposing netminders during the first frame. St. Thomas placed 11 shots on net to the Falcons' 10.
-Aaron Trotter made his first appearance in net after returning from injury and flashed the pads and leather for a pair of fantastic saves at 7:05 and 7:27.
-The senior goalie may have been outdone by his freshman foe Steinman on the other side. The Toronto native made two cross-crease diving stops on Ryan O'Neill at 16:02 and Jake Braccini at 19:37 to preserve the tie.

Second Period
-It was more of the same for most of the second period as the game stretched scoreless into the 15th minute. The deepest a Tommie/Falcon game had gone without a goal in the matchup's history.
-Dominik Rymon broke the stalemate at 14:24 from Noah Morneau and Breck McKinley. Rymon and Morneau were the reigning CCHA Rookie and Forward of the Week, respectively.
-The Tommies challenged the goal but came up empty on the review and, because they had previously taken their timeout at the 6:08 mark, were assessed a delay of game penalty.
-Bowling Green scored on the ensuing power play at 16:10.
-Despite being outshot 12-6 in the period, the Falcons had a two-goal lead headed into the second intermission.

Third Period
-Steinman and the Falcons battened down the hatches and fended off 13 of the Tommies' 15 shots in the final frame. Bowling Green offered just two shots on net toward Trotter.
-The Tommies finally broke through at 16:06 with the entirety of their top scoring line in on the tally. Ryan O'Neill darted up the near side wall and flashed a pass through traffic to Alex Gaffney who then snapped a shot off the goaltender's pad and right to Lucas Wahlin who potted his sixth of the season.
-Still down by a goal, the Tommies pulled their goalie at 18:45 and on their second shot at 19:56, scored with the extra attacker on. Chase Cheslock feathered a pass down to Lucas Van Vliet who ripped a sharp-angled shot into the crease for Alex Gaffney to tip the loose puck home.

Overtime
-The Purple earned one point by the skin of their teeth but could not capture the other.
-Bowling Green scored early into the overtime period.
