No. 15 St. Thomas travels to No. 1 Wisconsin for WCHA series

Tommies face Badgers at La Bahn arena Thursday and Friday

ST. PAUL, MINN.- The No.15 St. Thomas women's hockey team (8-8, 3-7) hits the road as they head to Madison Wisconsin to take on the No.1 Wisconsin Badgers (12-1-1, 8-1-1) in a WCHA top 15 matchup.  

 

It was a short week for the Tommies as they will face the Badgers on Thursday and Friday with puck drop slated for 7 p.m. both nights at La Bahn Arena.

Last time out 

The Tommies had a tough battle with the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs but fell 3-1 on Friday evening and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. 

 

In game one, Rylee Bartz tallied her ninth goal of the season on a power play assisted by Whitney Horton and Nora Sauer

 

Both Tommie goals in game two came off the power play, first off the sticks of Ella Boerger and second from Ellah HauseIlsa Lindaman, Boerger and Hause all tallied two points in Saturday's loss. 

 

Strength in numbers 

As a team, the Tommies have totaled 15 power play goals through the first 16 games of the season. Ilsa Lindaman and Ellah Hause lead the team with three a piece. Rylee BartzElla Boerger, and Chloe Boreen are just behind with two each. 

 

WCHA Honors  

The Tommies have received four weekly league honors so far this season. Rylee Bartz leads the way with two forward of the week honors. 

Rylee Bartz – Forward of the week (Sept. 22 & Nov. 10) 

Ellah Hause – Defender of the week (Oct. 20) 

Jenessa Gazdik –Defender of the week (Nov. 10) 

 

WCHA Leader Board 

The Purple and Gray offense sits in second on the WCHA leader board in power-play percentage with a .283.  

Individually, Rylee Bartz leads the league in the face-off wins/total face-off category with 196 wins and 133 losses for a .596 winning percentage. Ella Boerger sits third with 199 wins and only 99 losses for .668 winning percentage. 

Ellah Hause and Jenessa Gazdik are tied for third on the blocked shot leader board with 24 each. JuliAnna Gazdik and Haley Maxwell are not far behind with 22 a piece. 

 

National Rankings 

The St. Thomas Tommies jumped into the national polls back on October 20th for the first time of the Division I era and are currently ranked No. 15 in the both the USA Hockey Poll and USCHO poll.  

 

DI Era Record Holders 

Rylee Bartz (58), Ella Boerger (58), and Madison Brown (46) make up the top three in career points. 

Ella Boerger (37), and Rylee Bartz (31), round out the top two in D1 era assists.  

 

Scouting the Badgers 

The reigning national champions and top ranked Wisconsin Badgers currently hold a 12-1-1 record and are 8-1-1 in WCHA play. The Badgers lone loss came to Minnesota at home on October 31st when the Badgers fell 5-1. Most recently the Badgers posted a 4-4 tie with the No. 10 St. Cloud State Huskies but won the shootout 2-1. 

As a team, the Badger offense has scored 73 goals while only giving up 18, averaging 5.2 goals per game. 

 

History with the Badgers 

The Tommies have yet to beat the Badgers since first meeting back in 2021 and hold a 0-17 record.
