Four straight goals for the Tommies followed by six consecutive for the Friars
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Four first period goals, five second period goals, and a pair of third period tallies between the Providence Friars (2-2-1) and St. Thomas Tommies (2-4-1) on night two at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena. The Friars pulled away with six unanswered to down the Tommies 7-4 in front of 3,313.
Period Summary
First Period
-Providence got the goal-fest started 19 seconds into the contest.
-The Tommies would not score until the final two minutes, and then they exploded for three in 69 seconds. Hayes Hundley was the first to score at 18:07 from Nathan Pilling. It was Hundley's first career goal, and it came on a seeing-eye shot from the point that beat the Friar netminder cleanly.
-Lucas Wahlin tipped a Mason Poolman point shot into the net at 19:04 to give the Tommies their first lead. Alex Gaffney earned the secondary assist.
-Bauer Berry scored the first goal of his career at 19:15, unassisted. Berry joined his defensive partner, Hundley, with a clean shot from the point.
-The Friars pulled their goalie after the three goals on three straight Tommie shots.
Second Period
-Hundley got called for a high sticking minor at 2:04, the first penalty of the game for either side. After scoring two shorthanded goals the night before, the Tommies stayed aggressive on their first penalty kill.
-Alex Gaffney came in for a forecheck on the new netminder, freshman Jack Parsons, who was making his first collegiate appearance. Parsons played the puck behind his net without realizing Gaffney had snuck through to take the puck away. Once Gaffney nabbed the puck, he wrapped around to the front of the net and scored his CCHA-leading fifth goal of the season.
-Then things got dicey. Providence scored at 8:07, 9:17, 9:41, and then again at 15:33 (on the power play). Four unanswered goals on nine shots to take the lead.
Third Period
-They added two more at 9:50 on the power play and 14:47.
-Will Ingemann made his collegiate debut at 9:50 and made a pair of saves on three shots faced.
-The Tommies climbed back to within two momentarily before Alex Gaffney's second goal of the night was disallowed due to a high stick prior to the shot.
Quick Hits
-Jake Braccini and Quinton Pepper each played in their 100th career game for the Tommies. They are the sixth and seventh Tommies to do so in the DI era.
