Men’s Hockey opens Lee & Penny Anderson Arena against #15 Providence

10/23/2025 2:28:00 PM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies play hockey on campus for the first time in the DI era this Friday and Saturday

St. Paul, Minn. – After four years of playing Division I hockey out of a high school rink, St. Thomas Men's Hockey (2-3-0) will play in front of a 4,000+ crowd this coming Friday and Saturday at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena against the #15 Providence Friars (1-2-0) for the first time.
The Tommies are coming off a road split with the Air Force Falcons in which they won game one, 11-2, and lost game two, 6-2. That 11-goal game was program-record breaking in too many categories to count with goals from eight different Tommies and points from all but three skaters in the lineup.
Providence has only hit the ice three times this season with a season-opening series sweep at home at the hands of Michigan and then a 5-1 win over RPI on the road last weekend. The Friars deploy tremendous skill up and down the lineup and are spearheaded by 10th overall draft pick, Roger McQueen, the talented Saskatoon native has one collegiate point in his first three games. They have been backstopped in every game this season by fourth rounder, Philip Svedeback.

THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES
-The Tommies and Friars battle for the first time in DI program history on Friday, October 24th at 7:07 p.m. CST and Saturday, October 25th at 7:07 p.m. CST. The games will be the first two men's hockey games to take place at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.
-Providence finished 21-11-5 last season under head coach, Nate Leaman. 2024-25 was the Friar's eighth 20-win campaign under Leaman during his 15-year tenure. They made it to the NCAA tournament for the seventh time under Leaman, and the 16th time in program history. The Friars lost to Denver in the first round at the Manchester Regional.
-St. Thomas finished last season as one of the hottest teams in college hockey. Their historic run ended at the Mason Cup Final with a loss in their first trip to the CCHA Championship game. Had they won that game, they would not have been eligible for the tournament. The Tommies are eligible for the NCAA tournament this season.
-The Friars are 1-2 to begin this season and have been nationally ranked since the USCHO's preseason poll. They got swept by Michigan, 5-1 and 3-1, at home before taking down RPI on the road, 5-1. Will Elger led the way with two goals. While acknowledging the sample size is still quite small, they have been great on special teams with a 37.5% power play and 91.7% penalty kill.
