Women’s Hockey set for home-and-home against #11 St. Cloud State

The Tommies travel to St. Cloud on Friday before hosting the Huskies on Saturday

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas Women's Hockey team is set for a home-and-home series against #11 St. Cloud State. Puck drop is set for 3:00 p.m. on Jan. 31 at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, and 2:00 p.m. on Feb. 1 at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Last Weekend Recap
St. Thomas women's hockey swept #4 UMD last weekend. The Tommies earned a 3-2 victory on Thursday, following up with a 4-3 OT win on Friday.
 
The series sweep marked the first time the Tommies have defeated a top five opponent, and the first sweep of a nationally-ranked team.
 
Head Coach Bethany Brausen
On Sunday, The University of St. Thomas Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Phil Esten announced Bethany Brausen as the next head coach of the Tommie women's hockey program.
 
Brausen brings a wealth of experience to the head coaching roll, serving as St. Thomas top assistant, active head coach and interim head coach since joining the program in 2021.
 
As the interim head coach in 2024-25, Brausen led the Tommies to their first sweep of a top-5 opponent, upending the #4 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs this past weekend.
 
Scouting the Huskies
The #11 St. Cloud State Huskies (12-9-5, 7-9-4 WCHA) are coming off a weekend against the top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers. The Huskies fell in game one, responding with a 2-2 tie in the series finale on Sunday.
 
Alice Sauriol (3G, 12A – 15P) leads the Huskies' offense, as Sanni Ahola and Emilia Kyrkkö have been rock-solid in net all season. Ahola holds a 2.09 GAA, .920 SV%, two shutouts and has posted seven wins. As a freshman, Kyrkkö has recorded a 1.89 GAA, .931 SV% and has posted three shutouts to begin her collegiate career.
 
History Against the Huskies
The Tommies are 3-9-2 overall against the Huskies, including a 2-4-1 record at home and a 1-5-1 record in St. Cloud.
 
Earlier this season, the two teams tied 1-1, with St. Thomas picking up the extra point in the shootout in Mendota Heights. In game two on the road, St. Cloud State earned a 3-1 victory over the Tommies.
 
Seven of the 14 outings between the two squads have been decided by one goal or resulted in a tie.

 Newest Member of Tommie Hockey
Junior goaltender, Maddie Mootz has joined the Tommie Hockey roster. The Buffalo, Minn. native competed on the St. Thomas club hockey team before joining the program. Mootz will wear #35 for the Purple.
 
WCHA Leaders
  • Through 26 games played, Ellah Hause ranks second in the WCHA in blocked shots (65).
  • Rylee Bartz leads the Tommies and ranks seventh in the WCHA in face-off wins (234).
  • Dani Strom leads WCHA goaltenders in total saves (611).

WCHA Pre-Season Poll
Tommie Women's Hockey was picked to finish sixth in the eight-team WCHA preseason poll, voted on by league head coaches.

Last season's national runner-up Wisconsin was selected among league head coaches to win the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's 2024-25 regular season title. The top four teams in the poll qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year.

St. Thomas plays eight of its final 14 games at home in 2025, including series against Wisconsin, Duluth and Bemidji State.
 
The Tommies wrap up the regular season with a home-and-home series against Minnesota State, playing the series finale at Saint Thomas Ice Arena on Feb. 22.
