8/30/2024 9:02:00 PM | Volleyball
St. Thomas falls to Southern Indiana (3-1) and Bradley (3-0) to open 2024
PEORIA, Ill. -- A pair of double-double performances wasn't enough during the 2024 season opening day as St. Thomas fell to Southern Indiana (25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 23-25) and the host Bradley (20-25, 22-25, 20-25). Sophomore Morgan Kealy paced the Tommies (0-2, 0-0 Summit) with 34 assists and 13 digs against USI and senior Luaren Galvin totaled 12 kills and 11 digs against BU.
Southern Indiana – L, 3-1
Four kills from junior Kaitlynn Peterson and a .212 team hitting percentage paced a quick start to the season by the Tommies, coming away with a 25-19 set one win. St. Thomas came back from an early three-point deficit with a 7-1 run, including two kills from Peterson and one from redshirt freshman Addie Schmotzer. The Screaming Eagles regained a one-point lead once before two quick runs helped the Tommies to the opening win.
Southern Indiana bounced back in the second set as St. Thomas kept it tight throughout. The set featured 13 tie scores and seven lead changes, but back-to-back kills and a service ace sealed the 25-23 victory for USI. After trailing 10-9 to start the third set, the Purple rattled off a 10-4 run to lead, 20-14. A string of attack errors allowed USI to score the final 11 points of the set to win, 25-20.
The Tommies faced an 11-6 deficit early in set four but chipped away with short runs, eventually tying the set at 19-19 off a kill from junior Megan Wetter. Another kill from Wetter, her seventh and final of the match, gave St. Thomas its final lead, 21-20. USI's Jasmine Green accounted for four of the team's final five points (four kills) to seal the match.
Bradley – L, 3-0
Junior Maria Chapman started the match with a service ace that helped the Toms to an early 3-1 lead. The two point lead was the most for the Purple in the set as Bradley took its final lead, 18-17, and closed with five of the final six points. The Tommies outhit the Braves in the set, .302 to .282, but hit six service errors.
St. Thomas trailed by as many as four points early in set two but saw the game tied following four BU errors. Kills from Peterson and Rudzitis started a 6-2 run and an 18-15 lead. BU answered with four straight points, including two service aces, and scored six straight to win the set, 25-23.
Despite a 4-1 deficit early in the final frame, Rudzitis totaled three kills, along with two from Galvin and sophomore Emily Clausen, to grab the lead at 13-12. After a kill from Galvin to push the lead to two, Bradley went on to score 13 of the next 19 points for the match win.
