Tommie Volleyball falls to DePaul in final match of CEFCU Invitational.

PEORIA, Ill. – Day two for Tommie Volleyball in 2024's lid-lifter ended in three sets against the Blue Demons of DePaul (25-21, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Morgan Kealy led the Tommies (0-3, 0-0 Summit) with 25 assists and 10 digs.

Recap
DePaul opened the first set with a 12-5 lead. Both sides traded points as the Tommies continued to trail 17-10 before they rifled off three consecutive positive offensive plays. Ava Wild delivered a kill from Allie Kopp to return service to St. Thomas. Luisa Juncu added an ace and then Tezra Rudzitis brought the score back to within four points. That sequence began an 11-3 run that put the Toms in front for the first time, 21-20. The Blue Demons took the chance to serve back and did not give it away as they scored five straight points to take set one, 25-21.

A 7-1 Blue Demon run began the second set followed by a 6-1 Tommie run with kills from Libby Mattila, Addie Schmotzer, Morgan Kealy, and Lauren Galvin. The Purple trimmed the Blue Demon lead down to one at 13-12 but DePaul finished the second set on a 12-6 burst to take the frame, 25-18.

The first two points of the decisive final set went to DePaul. St. Thomas did not win multiple points until Mattila and Rudzitis went back-to-back with kills as DePaul's lead dwindled to 11-8. Both teams traded two points before the Blue Demons put a four-point run together, 17-10. For every punch St. Thomas delivered, DePaul had a counterpunch. The Tommies got two points followed by two from DePaul. The Purple went on a three-point run followed by a three-point stanza for the Blue Demons. While down 22-16, the Toms went on a 6-2 run, but it was too late as the Blue Demons delivered the final blow, 25-21.
