Swanson crowned Summit League champion behind program record

Men total five point scorers, women total three during opening day of Summit League Championships

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Anna Swanson continued her storied outdoor season to begin the 2024 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, becoming St. Thomas women's track & field's first ever champion behind a program record in the javelin.
 
Swanson's title was one of three point scoring finishes for the women's program during the opening day while the men totaled five, including three in the javelin.
 
Swanson won the javelin with a throw of 47.65 meters (156-4), breaking her previous record by 0.15 meters. She qualified for finals and broke the record on her fifth attempt of the event, which ranks 68th in the nation this season. Swanson's event win gives St. Thomas 10 points while Chloe Staub took eighth in javelin with a throw of 39.05m (128-1) to earn an additional one point.
 
Nate Raddatz led the opening day of competition for the men's program with a fourth place finish in the javelin behind a throw of 57.34m (188-1). His fourth-place finish totaled five points for the men's team, while Grayson Spronk took seventh in the event to grab two points and Cameron Schulz finished eighth for one point.
 
Raddatz was also part of the opening day of the decathlon, which completed five of its 10 events. Raddatz ended the day fourth with 3586 points, trailing Jack Rosner in second with 3809. Spronk ended the day ninth in the decathlon, followed by Sam May in 10th and Schulz in 11th.
 
The 10,000m duo of Sean McNiesh and Charles Caven finished fourth and fifth, respectively. McNiesh grabbed five points for the men with a time of 30:22.10 while Caven set a personal record of 30:24.22, which is No. 6 on the men's all-time list. Tony Weeks took ninth with a personal record time of 30:59.85.
 
Ava Pankratz also earned five points for the women's team with a fourth place finish in the 10,000m run, setting a personal record of 36:04.70. Her improved time continues to hold the No. 4 mark on the program's all-time list.
 
Katie Nollette led the women's pole vaulters with a ninth place finish, tying a personal record of 3.78m (12-4.75). Morgan Koppelman took 10th with a personal record 3.63m (11-10.75), which ranks third all-time at St. Thomas, while Olivia Passeri finished 12th at 3.48m (11-5.00).
 
Olivia Keller and Lillian Allen each completed the first day of the heptathlon, led by Keller in seventh with 2823 points and Allen in 12th with 2407. Keller set the program's seventh fastest time in the 200m dash at 25.09.
 
Shane Aberg placed ninth in the hammer throw with a mark of 44.92m (147-4), setting a personal record while Trever Schirmer placed 11th with a toss of 41.11m (134-10). Emma Potratz led St. Thomas women in the hammer throw with a 13th-place mark of 45.18m (148-2).

The 2024 Summit League Outdoor Championships continue Friday, May 10 with the 110m hurdles as part of the decathlon beginning at 9:45 a.m.
