Baseball drops close midweek battle at Northern Illinois

Vos records third home run in five games and sixth of the season against the Huskies
DEKALB, Ill. – In its final non-conference game of the season, St. Thomas baseball (18-22, 12-8 Summit) fell to Northern Illinois (17-31, 11-14 MAC) at Ralph McKinzie Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Northern Illinois Huskies came out to an early lead in the midweek matchup. Up 5-0 after one, the Huskies held their lead for less than an inning.
St. Thomas tied the game in the top of second frame, led by a 2-RBI single from Mikey Gottschalk.
A three-run home run by Joe Vos gave the Tommies the lead in the top of the third inning, as the Purple carried this advantage until the bottom of the fourth frame. The third inning home run marked Vos' third home run in five games, and sixth of the season.
After three scoreless innings for both teams, Ben Vujovich tallied an RBI single to even the game while Vos recorded his fourth RBI of the afternoon to give the Toms the lead once again.
With the Tommies going into the final inning with a one run lead, Northern Illinois recorded walk-off hit to secure the victory.
Tanner Recchio and Vos finished the day with three hits each, as Vos also tallied three runs and four RBI.
Sean Marlow and Brigs Richartz recorded doubles for the Purple, with Richartz recording his team-leading 13th of the season.
