Softball’s late-game surge comes up short in Omaha finale

4/6/2024 7:02:00 PM | Softball

The Tommies staved off an eight-run rule decision with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team (7-30, 3-6 Summit League) mounted a slight comeback against the first place Omaha Mavericks (28-8, 5-1), but came up with too little too late in their 9-4 game three defeat.

GAME RECAP
For the third consecutive game, both starting pitchers had it going early with just one earned run allowed between Tommie starter Ella Cook and Maverick hurler Kamryn Meyer. Also for the third time in the series, Omaha got on the board first with an RBI-single with two outs in the top of the third inning.

The Tommies added plenty of traffic on the base paths through four innings, but Meyer's six strikeouts allowed her to dodge any runs from the Purple despite their four walks and two base hits.

The wheels fell off a bit defensively for the Tommies in the top of the fifth inning, a frame that resulted in four unearned runs on Cook's ledger. The sophomore arm recorded the first two outs of the inning before giving up two straight singles. After an unfortunate mental error on the infield, the Tommie outfield produced an error on a fly ball that resulted in two runs directly. Omaha's seven-hole hitter made the Tommies pay more for the error with a two-run home run.

Omaha nearly doubled their lead with four more runs in the top of the sixth on five hits, again all with two outs.

The home team staved off the eight-run rule with an offensive outburst in the bottom of the sixth but ultimately fell to the Mavericks 9-4.

Avery Wukawitz got the rally started with a lead off single and was moved up to second by a six-pitch walk of Ella Cook. After Cassidy Carby grounded into a twin-killing, Wukawitz scored from third on Morgan Klein's first hit of the contest. The game-two hero Abbi Stierlen kept the train rolling with a single to center field. Kameron Monson struck the ball well and reached on an infield error that scored Klein. Kenzie Miller came through in the cluth with a two-run double to center field.

Avery Wukawitz had the only multi-hit game for St. Thomas. Abbi Stierlen built upon her walk off home run yesterday with three successful reaches, a single and two walks.

UP NEXT
The Tommies head across the state line for a doubleheader on Wednesday with the Phoenix of Green Bay. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
