Tommies continue road stretch against Jackrabbits
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas baseball team is on the road facing South Dakota State in a weekend series.
The Summit League series in Brookings, S.D. is schedule for 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19, and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21.

Last Time Out
Last weekend, the Tommies swept defending Summit League Champions, Oral Roberts to remain on top of the standing for the third straight week.
Game One – W, 3-2
• Tanner Recchio, Max Moris and Matthew Maulik recorded multi-hit games for the Tommies, led by Maulik who went 3-for-4.
• Jacob Mrosko went 7.0 innings with six strikeouts, allowing just three hits. Carl Cano finished the final 2.0 innings, totaling three strikeouts, allowing one hit and recording his fifth save of the season.
Game Two – W, 7-5
• With two outs and bases loaded, Mikey Gottschalk recorded a bases-clearing double to lift the Tommies 3-0 in the top of the second inning.
• Five Tommies recorded two-hit days, as Max Moris, Brigs Richartz and Mikey Gottschalk all recorded doubles in game two.
Game Three – W, 8-2
• Ben Vujovich, Max Moris, and Joe Vos all totaled two hits, as Moris led the Tommies with four RBIs in the final game of the weekend.
• Devon Schewe and Kolby Gartner allowed eight hits in the sweep over the Golden Eagles. Gartner tied season-high seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
Next up for the Tommies
• St. Thomas Baseball is on the road facing South Dakota State in a weekend series.
• St. Thomas and South Dakota State competed in a two-game series back in March. The Jackrabbits defeated the Tommies in game one, however St. Thomas bounced back in game two with an 11-5 victory over South Dakota State.
• South Dakota State (15-19, 7-7 Summit) is led by head coach Rob Bishop in his eighth season with the Jackrabbits.
•In 34 games played, Cael Frost leads the Jackrabbit offense, posting a .381 batting avg., .821 SLG% and .469 OB%.
• Starting in eight games, Nic McCay leads the Summit League in ERA (2.08) and strikeouts (68).
Tommie Offense
•The St. Thomas offense has exploded in the first half of the season, totaling 188 runs in 27 games played. In 2023, the Tommies recorded 186 runs through 44 games.
•Nine Tommies have combined for 19 home runs to start the season. The Tommies totaled 14 home runs a season ago.
•Matthew Maulik (.394), Brigs Richartz (.360), and Ben Vujovich (.351), Zan Von Schlegell (.349), and Joe Roder (.343) all rank in the top-10 spots in the Summit League in batting average.

Jacob Mrsoko earned the Summit League Baseball Peak Pitcher of the week honor on Feb. 26 after his performance against SEMO:
• Earned first career win after a seven-inning, complete-game outing
• Allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out a career-high 12 Redhawks
• Surrendered just one hit and fanned 11 through the first six innings
• Earned the first weekly award of his career
Summit League Preseason Poll
•Juniors Ben Vujovich (OF) and Evan Esch (LHP) were named the St. Thomas Player and Pitcher to Watch, as released in the 2024 Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• St. Thomas was selected to finish sixth in the Summit Preseason Poll.
Leading the Pack
• Chris Olean begins his 15th season with St. Thomas in 2024. He has totaled an overall record of 377-225-1 (338-148-1 in NCAA Division III) since being named the head coach prior to the 2010 season.
• Olean is a three-time NCAA DIII Region Coach of the Year and closed out its DIII era by winning championships in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and region en route to a national runner-up finish and 37-10 record.
• During the last 12 DIII seasons the Purple won eight MIAC Championships, capped by third-place national finishes in both 2012 and 2014, in addition to the runner-up finish in 2021.
• Olean mentored seven DIII All-American pitchers. He was voted MIAC and Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013, and 2021. In addition, Olean works with the Tommie pitching staff, which was a perennial top-10 group in DIII baseball.
