Baseball falls in series opener at UIC

CHICAGO – St. Thomas baseball fell to the UIC Flames in the series opener on Saturday afternoon.

In the first meeting between the two squads, UIC recorded multiple runs in five of the game's innings to secure a win the Tommies.

Matthew Maulik and Mikey Gottschalk reached base in opening at-bats of the game to start the series against UIC. Max Moris drove-in Maulik and Gottschalk, tallying St. Thomas' first two runs of the game and recording a 2-RBI triple.

UIC responded quickly, tying the game in the bottom of the first inning.

After a scoreless second inning, the Flames scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the game.

The Tommies recorded four straight hits in the top of the fourth, including a three-run home run by Zan Von Schlegell, the first of his career. After the Tommies equalized the game in the top of the inning, the Flames once again responded and regained the lead.

After scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, and adding three more in the eighth, UIC held the lead and defeated the Tommies 14-5 on Saturday afternoon.

The St. Thomas pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts, including seven from Saturday's starter Jacob Mrosko (1-3).
