Baseball swept in series finale at UIC

Tommies fall in two close battles to close trip to Chicago
CHICAGO – St. Thomas baseball closed its road trip to Chicago with a doubleheader against UIC on Sunday afternoon.
After taking an early lead, the Tommies went to extra innings in game one. UIC ultimately defeated St. Thomas with a walk-off win in the 11th inning, 5-4.
Game two remained scoreless until the Flames scored two runs in the seventh inning. Shutting out the Tommies, UIC held on to the 2-0 lead to earn the series sweep.
Game One – L, 5-4
After two scoreless innings, UIC earned the first run of the game in the third inning, holding the 1-0 lead through the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, the Purple recorded four straight hits to start the inning. After loading the bases, Brigs Richartz doubled to right field, sending in two runs. Max Moris and Joe Vos added RBIs, extending the Tommies lead to 4-1.
The Flames added two runs in eighth inning, creating a one-run game going into the final frame. UIC then tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game into extra innings for the first time this season.
After a leadoff triple in the bottom of the 11th inning, UIC recorded a walk-off win to end game one of the doubleheader.
Walker Retz posted his third start of the season, throwing seven strikeouts and allowing one run in 7.0 innings. Carl Cano recorded four strikeouts, allowing one run in 2.1 innings of work.
Game Two – L, 2-0
The series finale and game two of the doubleheader remained scoreless through six frames, as the Tommies did not allow a hit through these innings.
On their second hit of the game, the Flames recorded an RBI-single, driving home the first run of the game. UIC added one more run, doubling its lead and taking a 2-0 advantage into eighth inning.
Unable to score in the final frames of the weekend, the Tommies fell to UIC in game two of the doubleheader.
Devon Schewe and Kolby Gartner (1-1) combine for a two-hitter. Out of the bullpen, Gartner threw for 6.0 innings and tallied seven strikeouts.
