Baseball opens conference play on the road at Northern Colorado

The Tommies wrap up their season-opening road stretch, traveling to Colorado for a three-game Summit League series

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Thomas baseball team travels to Greeley, Colo. to play Northern Colorado in a three-game series. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. CT on Friday, March 15, and 1:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17.

Last Time Out
Game One  – L, 14-5
Zan Von Schlegell recorded his first collegiate home run, recording a three-run home run for the Tommies
• The St. Thomas pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts, including seven from Saturday's starter Jacob Mrosko (1-3).
Game Two – L, 5-4 (11 innings)
Walker Retz posted his third start of the season, throwing seven strikeouts and allowing one run in 7.0 innings. Carl Cano recorded four strikeouts, allowing one run in 2.1 innings of work.
Game Three – L, 2-0
• The series finale and game two of the doubleheader remained scoreless through six frames, as the Tommies did not allow a hit through these innings.
Devon Schewe and Kolby Gartner (1-1) combine for a two-hitter. Out of the bullpen, Gartner threw for 6.0 innings and tallied seven strikeouts.
 
Next up for the Tommies
• St. Thomas travels to Colorado to play UNC in the first Summit League games of the season
• The Tommies hold a 4-2 overall record against Northern Colorado. The Tommies hold an 2-1 record on the road, and 2-1 record at Koch Diamond.
•The University Northern Colorado baseball program (0-16) is led by Head Coach Mike Anderson in his 2nd season.  
•Sophomore, Kai Wagner leads the Bears offensively, recording a .333 batting avg., 1.005 OPS and recording 17 hits and three home runs in 13 games played.
• On the mound, freshman Trevor Landen has made five relief appearances for UNC. In 9.1 innings played, Landen has recorded a 1.93 ERA, allowing five runs and walking six batters.
 
Tommie Offense
•The St. Thomas offense has exploded in the first month of the season, totaling 108 runs in 15 games played. In 2023, the Tommies recorded 34 runs in 15 games played in the months of February and March.
•Eight Tommies have combined for 15 home runs to start the season. The Tommies totaled 14 home runs a season ago.

Milestones
Brigs Richartz and Max Moris have hit the 100 DI games played milestone. Ben Vujovich (98) is the next Tommie nearing the milestone.
•The trio of Brigs Richartz (116), Ben Vujovich (110) and Max Moris (101) have all reached the 100 hits in the DI era.
Walker Retz currently has recorded 111 career strikeouts. Evan Esch (98) and Kolby Gartner (93) have the 100 career strikeouts milestone on their horizon.

Summit League Weekly Honors
Jacob Mrsoko earned the Summit League Baseball Peak Pitcher of the week honor on Feb. 26 after his performance against SEMO:
• Earned first career win after a seven-inning, complete-game outing
• Allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out a career-high 12 Redhawks
• Surrendered just one hit and fanned 11 through the first six innings
• Earned the first weekly award of his career
 
Summit League Preseason Poll
•Juniors Ben Vujovich (OF) and Evan Esch (LHP) were named the St. Thomas Player and Pitcher to Watch, as released in the 2024 Summit League Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• St. Thomas was selected to finish sixth in the Summit Preseason Poll.
 
Leading the Pack
Chris Olean begins his 15th season with St. Thomas in 2024. He has totaled an overall record of 369-222-1 (338-148-1 in NCAA Division III) since being named the head coach prior to the 2010 season.
• Olean is a three-time NCAA DIII Region Coach of the Year and closed out its DIII era by winning championships in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and region en route to a national runner-up finish and 37-10 record.
• During the last 12 DIII seasons the Purple won eight MIAC Championships, capped by third-place national finishes in both 2012 and 2014, in addition to the runner-up finish in 2021.
• Olean mentored seven DIII All-American pitchers. He was voted MIAC and Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2012, 2013, and 2021. In addition, Olean works with the Tommie pitching staff, which was a perennial top-10 group in DIII baseball.
