Baseball begins Summit League play strong, earns two victories over Northern Colorado

Tommies secure series against Northern Colorado, defeating the Bears in the Saturday doubleheader
GREELEY, Colo. -- St. Thomas baseball opened Summit League play at Northern Colorado with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Defeating the Bears 4-0 in game one, the Tommies earned their first shutout victory since April of 2022 against Minnesota.
After being down two runs early in the second game of the day, St. Thomas earned a comeback victory, securing the series against Northern Colorado.
Game One – W, 4-0
St. Thomas Baseball shutout Northern Colorado in the Summit League opener on Saturday afternoon. In game one of the doubleheader, the Tommies outhit the Bears 14-1.
Scoring the first run of the game in the fifth inning, St. Thomas held onto the lead for the remainder of the game, adding runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
Max Nyrop recorded two RBIs, including driving home Brigs Richartz for the first run of the game.
Matthew Maulik, Ben Vujovich and Max Moris each tallied a double in game one of the afternoon.
Jacob Mrosko (2-2), Marcus Kruzan and Carl Cano combined for 11 strikeouts, allowing just one hit in the first shutout of the season.
Game Two – W, 5-3
After getting shutout in game one, Northern Colorado recorded its first hit of the game in the first at-bat, and scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead in game two.
Joe Roder led off the second inning with a solo home run to cut the Bear's lead in half. The Tommies then evened the game in the fourth inning as Mikey Gottschalk posted an RBI-single, driving home Roder.
The Tommies took their first lead of the contest in the sixth; however Northern Colorado quickly tied the game once again in the bottom of the inning.
With his second solo home run of the game, Roder regained the Purple's lead in the seventh inning. Adding a fifth run in the ninth inning and keeping the Bears off the board the remainder of the game, St. Thomas earned a 5-3 win at Jackson Field in game two.
Max Skilbeck (1-0) earned his first win of the season, recording four strikeouts and allowing two hits in 2.0 innings of work. Cano closed game two, earning his second save of the day and fourth of the season.
