Offensive explosion leads to split for Softball

3/2/2024 8:58:00 PM | Softball

The Tommies scored 19 runs in their two games on Saturday with five home runs and eight extra base hits.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – St. Thomas Softball (3-16) split with the Creighton Bluejays and Southern Illinois Edwardsville Cougars on day two of the Cougar Invite. They tallied 19 runs between their two games, the most this season in a two-game span.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Tommies showcased their best offense of the season but also allowed the most runs of the year on defense in game one. They scored eight runs on 12 hits, four extra base-hits with two home runs.

Avery Wukawitz set the table all game long for the Tommies and went 3-4 with two doubles, a home run, two RBI, three runs scored, and a steal of home. She kicked off the bottom of the first inning with a double and came around to score on a Laken Lienhard sacrifice fly. The 1-0 lead would be their last of the game.

The Bluejays answered right back with six runs in the next two frames. Wukawitz struck again, this time with a two-run home run in the third inning to score Adrianna Young. Creighton scored two in the fourth to restore their lead to 9-3.

The Tommies' starting pitcher helped herself for the second consecutive start with her third home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. The two-run shot put the Toms behind by four runs.

An inning later, Wukawitz doubled again and stole home. Cassidy Carby singled home Kaitlyn Raymond, 9-7 Bluejay lead.

St. Thomas mustered just one run in the last two innings on an Ella Cook single to score Raymond. Creighton tacked on seven more and came away with the 16-8 victory.

Wukawitz, Raymond, and Crawford each tallied a multi-hit game. Wukawitz stretched her hit streak to seven games. Raymond tallied her 11th hit in her last 10 games. Crawford is 4-13 this season at the plate with three home runs.

GAME TWO RECAP
The red-hot St. Thomas offense stayed alive with 11 runs in just five innings against the hosting Southern Illinois Edwardsville Cougars. Ella Cook got the complete game win and allowed just two earned runs on six hits with a season-high nine strikeouts.

Cook tossed two scoreless innings to start with three strikeouts. The offense got things going their second time through the order. Kenzie Miller got on base with a one-out hit-by-pitch and then Avery Wukawitz reached on an error while attempting to bunt Miller over to second.

Kaitlyn Raymond opened the Tommies' six-run third inning with an RBI single up the middle to score Miller. Christina Crawford continued her impressive stretch of hitting with a two-run double. Next up to the plate was the starting pitcher, Cook. She took a pitch way over the left-center field fence for her third home run of the season. Cass Carby's two-out single kept the hit party going and then Laken Lienhard smoked a ball to left-center field to score Carby. The Toms batted around in the inning and scored six runs on five hits.

Cook went to work with the large lead and struck out two in a scoreless bottom of the third. The Tommies weren't done on offense and scored two more to open up an 8-0 lead. Crawford brought Wukawitz home on a sacrifice fly and then Cook sent Raymond to score on a single up the middle.

The Cougars grabbed their first run in the bottom of the third and the Toms answered with three runs on one swing of the bat in the fourth. Maddie Grad sent her first home run of the season over the left field fence to score Lienhard and Ruby Moore

Cook and the defense staved off a late push from the Cougars and the sophomore punched out the last batter she faced. The Tommie held onto the 11-3 lead and won their first run-rule game of 2024.

Wukawitz stretched her hitting streak to eight games and Raymond tallied her 12th and 13th hits in her last 11 games.
