Tommies blast six home runs in day one split

3/15/2024 8:24:00 PM | Softball

The Tommies matched their program record five home runs in their game one loss to Boise State and added one more longball in their game two win over Idaho State.

BOISE, Ida. – St. Thomas Softball (4-21) took advantage of the high elevation and windy conditions on day one of the City of Trees Classic hosted by the Boise State Broncos on Friday afternoon with six home runs between the two games. The Tommies fell in game one, 10-9, to the hosting Broncos (16-10) despite a program record-tying five home runs but bounced back for a 5-3 win over the Idaho State Bengals (15-12).

GAME ONE RECAP
The Tommies got out to a quick start against the Mountain West's Boise State Broncos with a five-run lead through two and two-thirds innings. Ella Cook lined up as the clean-up hitting designated player and she got the day started with a two-run blast to right field, her team-leading fourth of the season.

Christina Crawford worked two scoreless frames to get the Toms to the top of the third where Abbi Stierlen deposited one over the center field wall to score Kaitlyn Raymond and give the Tommies a 4-0 lead. Ella Cook struck again in the third with her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot.

Boise State answered back with a three-run home run of their own in the bottom of the third. Maddie Grad roped a home run to left field that scored Kenzie Miller and put the Tommies in front 7-3. Miller than added on herself for a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Five home runs for the Tommies in five innings of play, but that would be all the scoring in the ballgame for the Purple.

The Broncos scored two runs on a home run in the fifth, 9-5 Tommie lead. Then they tied the game at nine with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning. Eight home runs in all between the two sides.

St. Thomas was unable to score in the top of the seventh inning which opened the door for Boise State's walk-off double in the bottom half. The Broncos toppled the Tommies in come-from-behind fashion, 10-9.

Ella Cook, Christina Crawford, and Kenzie Miller each tallied multi-hit games. Cook lead the way with eight total bases and three runs batted in. Also reaching safely in the ballgame were Kaitlyn Raymond (1-3, 2BB, 2SB, R), Abbi Stierlen (1-4, HR, BB, 2RBI, R), Morgan Klein (1-4, R), Cassidy Carby (1-4), and Maddie Grad (1-4, HR, R, 2RBI).

GAME TWO RECAP
The Tommies got out in front in the first inning again in game two. The starting pitcher, Ella Cook doubled in Kaitlyn Raymond who reached on a lead-off single. Morgan Klein brought Cook home with the Toms' sixth home run of the day. St. Thomas led 3-0 into the top of the third inning.

It was then that the Bengals broke through for one run off Cook in the circle. The sophomore pitcher stranded a runner on third to limit the damage. The Tommies got that one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kameron Monson led off with a five-pitch walk and was pinch ran for by Maddie Grad. Laken Lienhard moved Grad up to second and Cassidy Carby singled home the senior.

Cook continued her impressive pitching performance, twice stranding runners on second and third to end the fifth and sixth innings.

St. Thomas added an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, once again started by Monson. The Tommie catcher doubled to get the offense started. Lienhard moved her up with a single and Carby flew out to left field to score Monson on a sacrifice.

Idaho State clapped back for two runs on a two-out two-run home run off Cook. The sophomore pitcher struck out the final batter of the game and earned her third win of the season with a complete game.

Cook tossed seven innings and allowed just three earned runs on eight hits, three walks, while striking out five. She also went 2-3 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI.

Morgan Klein (1-3, HR, R) and Cassidy Carby (1-2) each tallied a pair of RBI.

UP NEXT
The Tommies open day two with the Idaho State Bengals at 1:00 p.m. CST tomorrow and then matchup with the Santa Clara Broncos shortly after the conclusion of their first game.
