The Tommies fell in all three games down in St. Louis, Mo., their closest loss of the weekend came in game three in a nine-inning 3-1 bout against Illinois.
SAINT. LOUIS, Mo. – St. Thomas Softball (3-23) was frustrated by a talented Saint Louis University (12-5) squad in games one and two on Saturday (9-1 and 8-5) and then fell in a marathon affair against Illinois (7-9) by a score of 3-1 in nine innings on Sunday.
GAME ONE RECAP
The hosting St. Louis Billikens wasted little time on their home field by scoring one run in the first and six runs in the second inning of the defense of St. Thomas. SLU hit three home runs in those first two frames and five in the game (two solo home runs in the bottom of the fifth).
The Toms were kept quiet on offense until a manufactured run in the top of the fifth inning. Abbi Stierlen led off the inning with a single before Ruby Moore came in to pinch run for the sophomore. Moore took second base on a steal with one out in the inning. Adrianna Young grounded out to second base and Moore advanced to third Kenzie Miller brought Moore home with an RBI single to center field, the Tom's only run of the game.
Morgan Klein had the Purple's only other hit in the game, a second-inning single. Stierlen got on base twice with a walk and the single that turned into the St. Thomas run. Klein came in to relieve starter Christina Crawford and pitched 3.1 innings of work out of the bullpen.
GAME TWO RECAP
Abbi Stierlen continued her hot stretch on Saturday to score the game's first two runs on a single in the first inning. Kaitlyn Raymond led off the game with single and advanced to second on a Laken Lienhard hit-by-pitch. Ella Cook's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position and Stierlen did the rest.
Morgan Klein singled Stierlen to third and then Marleigh Louvar tacked on her first career RBI to score the Tommie first baseman on a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Billikens answered the call with one run in the second and five in the third to recapture a 6-3 lead. Laken Lienhard's run-scoring single in the fourth made it a 6-4 game but SLU grabbed two more in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Christina Crawford scored the game's final run in the top of the fifth inning. She singled Louvar to cut the score back to a three-run margin. Crawford then came on to relieve Ella Cook and pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout in the 8-5 losing effort.
Kaitlyn Raymond and Kenzie Miller each tallied multi-hit games, Miller's double was the only extra base hit of the game for St. Thomas. Raymond also stole a game-high two bases.
GAME THREE RECAP
Game three was the Tommies' first matchup with the University of Illinois in program history and it was an instant classic pitchers' duel. Crawford went all nine innings of the extra-inning affair and let up just one earned run.
Crawford allowed one run in the top of the fourth inning and two unearned in the top of the ninth inning. She pitched four perfect innings and allowed just six hits and one walk while tallying five strikeouts.
The Tommies' offense had a rough go of things with just three hits and one run. The Toms' only run of the game came on a Ruby Moore steal of home. Cassidy Carby walked to lead off the sixth and Kenzie Miller moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. Kaitlyn Raymond singled Carby to third and Moore came in off the bench to pinch run for Carby.
Raymond, Lake Lienhard, and Abbi Stierlen were the only Toms with hits in the ballgame.
