Trotter shines in 36-save shutout

Aaron Trotter now owns both of the Toms’ shutouts in DI program history with a 36-save performance at Michigan Tech.
HOUGHTON, Mich. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (14-17-2, 12-10-1 CCHA) shutout the Michigan Tech Huskies (14-14-6, 11-10-2) 2-0 behind Aaron Trotter's 36 saves on Friday night in front of a hostile crowd in Houghton.
GAME RECAP
The Tommies have had some of the best goaltending in the CCHA this season but in 32 games they did not have a single shutout performance. Aaron Trotter owned the program's only shutout last season in a 4-0 November victory over Lake Superior State.
The second shutout in program history carried a bit more weight in a 2-0 game on the road during the final series of the regular season to clinch home ice in the first round of the CCHA playoffs. The sophomore stopped all 36 of the shots he faced, 17 in the first period, 11 in the second and eight down the stretch in the third.
Liam Malmquist broke the ice in the final minute of the second stanza on a slap shot from the left circle on a rebounded shot off the pad of the Huskies' netminder. Matthew Gleason earned the assist on his shot after Ethan Gauer's breakout pass.
The only other score of the game was an empty-netter with seven seconds to go from Matthew Gleason. Gauer tallied his second assist of the night on the play.
The Tommies' penalty kill was a perfect three-for-three, one kill in the second period and two in the final frame.
Michigan Tech outshot the Toms 36 to 27. Noah Prokop returned to action and went 15-8 on the faceoff dot.
