Career day for Crawford leads Softball to game one victory

The redshirt sophomore tallied two home runs and 4 RBI alongside a complete game in the Tom’s 4-3 win over Loyola Chicago.
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of St. Thomas Softball team (2-15) split with Loyola Chicago (6-7) and Illinois State (3-14) during the first day of the Southern Illinois Edwardsville Cougar Invite on Friday.
GAME ONE RECAP
Christina Crawford has crept her way into the Tommies DI record books on multiple occasions, including a 19-strikeout performance her freshman season. After missing an entire year due to injury last season, Crawford again rewrote Tommie history today.
The redshirt sophomore starting pitcher tossed a complete game, she gave up three earned runs, but that's not the special part. She also smashed a three-run home run to tie the game in the fourth inning, pitched three consecutive scoreless frames, and then launched a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to give herself and her team the victory.
She is just the fifth Tommie in program history with a two-HR game and the first this season. She is also the first pitcher to pitch a complete game and account for all of the game's RBI.
Crawford was the only Tommie with more than one hit in the game, Abbi Stierlen slapped a double in the middle innings and also drew a walk and scored on the three-run home run.
Avery Wukawitz led off the Toms' offense with her program-leading seventh career triple. Kaitlyn Raymond also tallied an extra base-hit, a double. Rounding out the Toms' six hit affair was Laken Lienhard who singled and scored in the fourth inning.
Crawford went all seven innings, allowed three earned runs on nine hits, four walks, and five strikeouts.
This was just the third time in program history that the Tommies won a game in which they were outhit (3-70).
GAME TWO RECAP
The Tommies could not keep their momentum rolling after giving up eight runs to the Illinois State Redbirds in the first two innings.
Their offense put together just three hits. Avery Wukawitz continued her hot start to the season with a single and a hit-by-pitch. Kaitlyn Raymond singled in the first inning. Morgan Klein doubled for the only extra base hit for the Tommies.
UP NEXT
The Tommies compete in day two of the SIUE Cougar Invite tomorrow with games against Creighton Bluejays (12:00 p.m.) and the hosting Cougars (5:00 p.m.).
