The Tommies fell to strong competition in both games of day one in College Station.
COLLEGE STATION, Tex. – St. Thomas Softball (1-11) dropped game one to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (11-3) 5-2 despite a late rally and fell in five innings to the 17th ranked Texas A&M Aggies (11-0) 10-2 on Friday at the Texas A&M Invitational.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Tommies got out to a slow start in the first two frames. Each of the first six batters were retired, four via the strikeout. Southeastern added one run in the bottom of the first inning but could have done more damage off Toms' starter Morgan Klein if not for the turn of an inning-ending double play by Cassidy Carby.
After a perfect one-two-three-inning from Klein and the defense, the Toms tied the game in the third. Kenzie Miller reached on a lead-off single and then scored on a Kaitlyn Raymond single to the outfield. Miller scored and Raymond ended up on second due to a Lion fielding error in left field.
SLU added two runs in the bottom half of the inning on two singles and a fielder's choice. Klein was chased from the game after a four-pitch walk with one out. The starter pitched 2.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks. Ella Cook came in to relieve her teammate and her battery-mate Kyllie Weingart caught the walked runner attempting to steal third.
Carby's single in the fourth was the only offense in the top of the inning. Weingart struck again in the fourth with her second runner caught stealing in the bottom half.
The Lions added two insurance runs in the fifth inning. St. Thomas did not go down without a fight. Avery Wukawitz led off the sixth inning with her fourth double of the season and then came around to score on an Ella Cook sacrifice hit.
Cook then worked a scoreless sixth inning. She tossed 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on two hits and four walks. The Toms went down in order in the top of the seventh inning.
GAME TWO RECAP
Game two against the 17th ranked Aggies got out to a hot start for the offense. Avery Wukawitz was plunked by the game's very first pitch. Two batters later Ella Cook crushed the ball over the left field scoreboard to give the Toms a 2-0 lead.
The longball was Cook's second of the season and fourth of her career. The two-run lead would not last as Texas A&M answered with three in the first, six in the second and one in the third.
Kenzie Miller and Kaitlyn Raymond each added a base hit. Raymond has reached safely in four straight games and five of her last six.
UP NEXT
The Tommies have two morning first pitches scheduled for day two of the Texas A&M Invitational. They take on Southeastern Louisiana at 9:00 a.m. for a rematch with the Lions. They suit up immediately for an 11:30 a.m. schedule start with the Roadrunners of Texas San Antonio.
