Men’s Hockey loses extra CCHA point in shootout
2/17/2024 12:14:00 AM | Men's Hockey
The Tommies lost in a shootout for the first time this season after 65 minutes of deadlocked hockey with Bowling Green.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – The St. Thomas Tommies (13-14-2, 11-7-1 CCHA) could not shake a surging Bowling Green (12-16-1, 10-8-1 CCHA) unit on Friday night at Saint Thomas Ice Arena and ultimately lost the extra conference point in a shootout after a 3-3 tie at the conclusion of regulation and overtime.
GAME RECAP
The Tommies' Mack Byers broke the seal with a one-tap goal at 16:16 of the first period. His linemates Ryan O'Neill and Cooper Gay each teamed up beautifully to feed the senior for his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Bowling Green answered back just under three minutes later with an equalizer on a St. Thomas turnover in their own zone.
With less than a minute remaining in the opening period, Grant Docter fed a puck to Ryan O'Neill in the neutral zone. O'Neill delivered it onto the stick of Gay and Cooper did the rest. He brought the puck across the line with a defender draped all over him. With the defense as tight as it was, his shot was forced from an extremely tight angle, but he bested Bowling Green's goaltender.
The Falcons were behind in the game despite outshooting the Toms 10-9 in the period.
The second stanza was one of the most unique in the Tommies' Division I era. Each team scored a power play goal, Bowling Green outscored the Toms 2-1 despite being outgunned 20 shots to three, there were 10 penalties called, and 44 penalty minutes doled out.
Bowling Green scored on their very first shot of the period at 0:53. Twenty-two seconds later they were called for an elbowing minor and the Toms retook the lead at 1:28. Luc Laylin delivered a smash of a one-timer through traffic. Mack Byers and Cooper Gay each assisted, Byer's second point and Gay's third of the evening.
Seven more penalties were called (four against Bowling Green) before the Falcons knotted things up once more, this time on the power play at 16:57. That tally would be the final goal of the contest.
There was not a goal or penalty to be seen in the final frame, nor the overtime.
The Toms sent out four shooters in the shootout to decide which team came away with the extra point but none could best freshman goaltender Cole Moore who pitched a 32 save shutout after coming in to relieve the Falcon's starter.

The Tommies, already having secured the season series, look to wrap things up with Bowling Green tomorrow night on home ice at 6:07 p.m.
