The Tommies scored two power play goals in their 4-1 victory over Michigan Tech
HOUGHTON, Mich. – St. Thomas Men's Hockey (4-9-4 Overall, 3-6-3 CCHA) got back on track with two power play goals in its 4-1 victory over RV Michigan Tech Huskies (8-5-1 overall, 6-3-1 CCHA) on Saturday night at Macinnes Arena. The Tommies do not play again for 22 days for the mid-season break.
Jake Sibell got the win with 17 saves and a goal allowed as Aaron Trotter made 12 saves in relief of the injured started halfway through the second period. Lucas Wahlin, Liam Malmquist, Matthew Gleason, and Cole Miller each scored in the victory. The Toms' top line each tallied two points.
Recap
The Huskies, looking to continue their play over from the night before, jumped on the Tommies early with four of the game's first shots on goal through three minutes. St. Thomas' netminder, Jake Sibell was up to the task.
Sibell kept the game scoreless long enough for the Tommies to jump out to an early lead at 8:36. Mason Poolman chipped a puck past a Husky skater onto the stick of Matthew Gleason who led a rush and made a pass to Lucas Wahlin on the left wing. Wahlin sent home his seventh goal of the season with a well-placed wrist shot.
The CCHA's best power play coming into the weekend was kept off the scoreboard in five attempts last night but capitalized on their first opportunity on Saturday at 11:53. Chase Cheslock and Luc Laylin played catch on the blue line before feeding Liam Malmquist. The conference's point leader dangled through to the left circle and ripped a wrist shot just inside of the far post for a two-goal Tommie lead.
Shortly after, Mason Poolman was called for a major high sticking penalty at 12:31 and the Huskies scored at 12:58. The Toms held Tech off the scoreboard for the remaining 4:33 of the major penalty.
Special teams came into play again with a St. Thomas power play at 19:37. The Toms won the faceoff and held the zone. Lucas Wahlin was deep in the left corner when he threaded a pass to Liam Malmquist in the far corner. Malmquist flung the puck toward the slot of a Husky stick to Matthew Gleason. The St. Paul native backhanded a goal with 0.4 seconds remaining on the clock for a 3-1 Tommie lead.
No goals were scored in the second period after a four-goal first frame. The Huskies outshot the Tommies 12-1 but could not beat the St. Thomas goaltending tandem of Jake Sibell (seven saves) and Aaron Trotter (five saves). Sibell was replaced by Trotter at 11:23 after taking a hit in his crease from a Husky forward that resulted in a Tommie power play.
Trotter continued his strong play in relief with seven saves in the final period. Cole Miller's empty net goal at 16:31 was the only tally for either team in the last two periods.
Jake Sibell earned his first win of the season with 17 saves and one goal allowed. Trotter made 12 saves without allowing a goal in relief. The Tommies' top line of Liam Malmquist, Matthew Gleason, and Lucas Wahlin each tallied a goal and two points. Gleason was incredible on faceoffs with a 14-6 record as the Toms outdrew the Huskies 26-23. St. Thomas won despite being outshot 30-17.
