Tommies earn season sweep over Roos heading into final weekend of season
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – St. Thomas volleyball rode its hot hand into Saturday's match as it came away with a straight set sweep at Kansas City (25-18, 25-17, 25-21) in Swinney Center. Tezra Rudzitis and Megan Wetter powered the Tommie offense as both hit over .400 with double digit kills, leading to the season sweep over the Roos.
The Tommies, who improved to 16-10 overall and 8-6 in the Summit League, are now one of 10 teams to transition since 2011 to reach at least 16 wins at any point through their transition period. As a team, the Purple hit .244 from the floor with seven service aces to just one service error.
A Tommie attack error gave the Roos their first lead of the match to start off set one, which was followed immediately with kills by Addie Schmotzer and Tezra Rudzitis and a UMKC attack error to take the lead for the rest of the game. A block assist by Morgan Kealy and Megan Wetter followed by back-to-back kills by Lauren Galvin pushed the lead to five early. The lead grew to as many as eight as St. Thomas hit .267 from the floor with 17 kills to earn the set win.
Although the Purple's hitting percentage dipped to .194 in the second set, it used three service aces in the game to control the Roos. Kealy opened the set with an ace before Galvin added two more as part of an set-opening 8-1 run. UMKC chipped away to close the gap to two, 10-8, but Wetter provided back-to-back-kills and a block assist with Galvin to take control of the remainder of the match. The Tommies went on a 6-2 run, including three Roos attack errors, for its largest lead of the set that stuck until the end, 25-17.
A Roos attack error set up a Tommie lead to start the third set that lasted until UMKC went on a 6-1 run to force a St. Thomas timeout. A kill extended the Roos' lead to three, 10-7, out of the timeout, but the Tommies did not allow the deficit to grow any larger. After trailing 18-15, Schmotzer hit her sixth and final kill to start the final Tommie comeback. The kill sparked a 6-1 run that included service aces by Galvin and Ella Voegele, two of three aces to end the match. The match-winning point came on the final ace of the day by Ellie Gustafson.
