St. Thomas completes the season sweep over South Dakota

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Senior Lauren Galvin came into her final weekend as a Tommie needing 23 kills to reach the 1,000-career milestone and ended Thursday with 23 kills to lead St. Thomas to a 3-1 win (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23) in Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies improve to 17-10 overall and 9-6 in the Summit League, marking just the eighth transitioning team since 2011 with 17 wins. The Purple also secured a winning record in league play after entering the season with seven Summit League wins since joining in 2021.

Galvin, entering the game with 977 career kills, finished with a team high 23 kills and a .308 hitting percentage to go along with eight digs and three service aces. She's the first Tommie to reach the 1,000-kill milestone during the Division I era.

Addison Schmotzer's lone kill of the opening set came at the start of the match as the Tommies jumped out to a 3-0 lead. South Dakota answered with four straight points for its only lead of the set, which was short lived as a block by Megan Wetter and Tezra Rudzitis, and a service ace by Allie Kopp gave the Tommies the lead for good. The Purple scored four straight points to lead by four, 9-5, and slowly pushed it to eight, 23-15. The Coyotes came back to trail three before Lauren Galvin closed out the set point with her seventh kill of the opening game.

After outhitting South Dakota in the first set, the Tommies hit .137 in the second compared to .207 for the Coyotes. USD flipped the script and went ahead 3-0 to start but the Purple came back to tie, 7-7. The Coyotes went on to score 13 of the next 17 points for a set-high nine-point lead, 20-11. A host of attack errors allowed the Tommies to get back into the game, pulling within three points at set point.

Both teams hit above .200 in the third set with a score that remained within two points until late in the game. The set featured 14 ties and eight lead changes, the last of which came as a 4-0 run by the Tommies to bring up set point. Galvin provided the kill for set point and sealed the game with her 17th kill of the match.

After USD led, 6-3, two kills by Galvin gave the Tommies a spark to take momentum in the final set. St. Thomas tied the game twice before taking its first lead on a kill by Ellie Gustafson. South Dakota took the lead back once but a USD error, a Galvin kill and block by Galvin and Wetter gave the Purple their final lead. Three straight points forced a USD timeout that was immediately followed by a service ace by Payton Willman for a 21-17 lead. The Coyotes drew back within one, 24-23, before a kill by Rudzitis secured the Tommie win and season sweep.
