ST. PAUL, Minn. — University of St. Thomas volleyball (10-11, 8-4 Summit League), a Summit League member in NCAA Division I, defeated Omaha (12-10, 6-6 Summit League) 3-1 on Friday, highlighted by a 9-0 run to open the fourth set in a 25-23 finish. The Tommies finished with a 58-40 kills advantage and a .231-to-.119 edge in hitting percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tommies led 16-10 in the first set and were still ahead 20-17, but Omaha scored four straight points to leave St. Thomas behind 20-21. Audrey Kocon delivered kills that brought the Tommies within 23-24 and tied the set at 24-24, but Omaha took the final two points on a service error and Alizabeth Jacobsen's kill as St. Thomas dropped the set 24-26.

The Tommies created the key separation in the second set by scoring four straight points from 14-11 to 18-11, with Anya Schmidt, Kocon and Ellie Gustafson each recording kills in that stretch. The Tommies added another push from 19-13 to 22-13 behind Kocon/Addie Schmotzer block and a Gustafson kill. Schmotzer closed the set with a Morgan Kealy-assisted kill to give the Tommies a 25-16 win.

The Tommies closed the third set by winning seven of the final eight rallies to turn an 18-17 edge into a 25-18 set win. Taylor McNear served the last five points, with Schmotzer and Gustafson adding kills and Kealy contributing a block during the finish. Earlier, the Tommies moved from a one-point deficit at 11-12 to a 16-13 lead behind points that included kills from Schmotzer and Schmidt.

Gustafson served the Tommies to a 9-0 opening run in the fourth set that included kills from Schmidt, Schmotzer and Kealy. After St. Thomas fell behind 21-22, the Tommies won four of the final five points, with Gustafson putting down a kill for set point and finishing the set with a service ace. The Tommies took the set 25-23.

Up next, St. Thomas volleyball hosts Oral Roberts on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. at Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota.
