ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas men's and women's swim and dive programs concluded their 2024-25 home invite where they began: in third place. After another resounding day filled with top-10 all-time performances, including one broken record, both Tommie teams finished the three-day invite in third place. The women scored 1025 total points at the St. Thomas Invite, while the men scored 1043.
WOMEN'S RESULTS:
The Tommie women put together some outstanding performances in the pool on Saturday, cementing their third place finish as a team. After a strong showing in the preliminary round, St. Thomas swimmers opened Friday's evening session with a fifth place finish in the 1650 freestyle, as Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central) closed her weekend with yet another top-5 finish. The sophomore and reigning Summit League Performer of the Week swam a season best 17:39.14 in the race, finishing in fifth place in the race. Teammates Elizabeth Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) and Gwen Moore (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) finished in the top-10 respectively, while Megan Toal (San Clemente, Calif. / San Juan Hills), Madeline Elseth (Grand Forks, N.D. / Central) and Ellie Sizemore (Norwalk, Iowa / Norwalk) scored for St. Thomas with top-15 finishes.
The Tommies saw several other swimmers earn top-4 finishes in a handful of races, including the 200 backstroke. Katelyn Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Visitation) clocked the third fastest time in prelims of the race before shaving over a second off her prelim time of 2:04.88 in finals. The first year claimed third place in the 200 back thanks to her time of 2:03.61, while Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis. / Cambridge) finished eighth with a time of 2:05.83. Jin-Jae Robinson (Galena, Ohio / Olentangy Berlin), Grace Hehr (Mason City, Iowa / Newman Catholic), Katherine Spanier (Albany, Minn. / Albany) and Willow Larson (Fairfield, Iowa / Fairfield) scored for St. Thomas and competed in the "C" finals of the race.
The Tommies best showing of the night came in the 100 IM, as four individual swimmers earned top-6 finishes in the race. Davis was the long St. Thomas student-athlete to swim under a minute in both prelims and finals, clocking the fastest time in the race at 59.81 in Saturday's morning session. The first year posted a time of 59.52 in the evening session to finish third. Her teammate, Amber Hess (Kohler, Wis. / Kohler) finished fourth with a time of 1:00.90, while Annika Olson (Shakopee, Minn. / Shakopee) and Sydney Mulford (Johns Creek, Ga. / Northview) finished fifth and sixth respectively.
While no one finished top-4 in the 100 freestyle, two Tommies did earn top-10 finishes, as Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) and Ellie Undem (Chisago City, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) finished sixth and ninth with times of 51.83 and 51.95 respectively. Similarly in the 200 breaststroke, Ashley Plantenberg (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) was the lone swimmer to finish in the top-10 for St. Thomas, coming in sixth with a time of 2:26.35.
Madison Parkin (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie), Makenna Monday (Grafton, Wis. / Cedarburg), Lily Linden (Rochester, Minn. / Century) and Maggie Kolb (Afton, Minn. / Mill-Murray) all qualified for either "B" or "C" finals in the 200 butterfly. Parkin earned the highest finish of any Tommie swimmer in the race, coming in eighth with a time of 2:09.54.
St. Thomas' final event of the weekend was none other than the 400 freestyle relay. With Hayes swimming leadoff, Elizabeth Bonneville the second leg, Libby Fischer (Edina, Minn. / Visitation) the third and Mary Selden (Davenport, Iowa / Davenport Central) serving as the anchor, the Tommies "A" team finished fourth with a time of 3:29.59.
