18-win Tommies earn first ever selections to all-league teams
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Sophomore Morgan Kealy headlined the first ever St. Thomas Summit League Volleyball All-League selections, as the Summit League's Setter of the Year was one of six named to the all-league teams, the conference office announced Saturday.
Kealy is one of five major award winners as she was selected as the best setter in the Summit League this season by the league's head coaches. South Dakota State earned three awards in Player of the Year (Sylvie Zgonc), Freshman of the Year (Madison Burr) and Coach of the Year (Dan Georgalas), while South Dakota garnered the final honor of Defensive Player of the Year (Kamryn Farris).
Three Tommies were named to the all-league team, including Kealy, senior outside hitter Lauren Galvin and junior middle blocker Megan Wetter. Juniors Tezra Rudzitis and Ella Voegele were each selected honorable mention. The group of five are the first Tommies to be selected to the all-league teams since joining the Summit League in 2021. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Addie Schmotzer became the fourth Tommie selected to the All-Freshman Team over the past four seasons.
Kealy, from River Falls, Wis., ranked second in the league with 9.63 assists per set and eighth with 2.99 digs per set during Summit League matches. She totaled 19 double-doubles through the entire season, increasing her career total to 27, and finished with at least 40 assists in 12 matches. Kealy set the program's DI single-season record with 1,020 total assists and 9.62 assists per set, and also recorded the second most assists in a match with 53.
Galvin, from Woodbury, Minn., was named the Summit League Offensive Peak Performer of the Week twice this season and ranked seventh in league matches with 3.78 points per set, eighth with 3.30 kills per set, 21st with a .228 hitting percentage, and 22nd with 2.34 digs per set. She became the first Tommie in the DI era to reach 1,000 career kills, holding the program's DI career marks in kills, kills pet set, attacks, aces, points and points per set. Galvin also set DI single-season records with 333 total kills and 378.5 total points, while also setting DI single-match records with 23 kills twice, 65 attacks and 27.0 points.
Wetter, from Monticello, Minn., was named the Summit League Defensive Peak Performer of the Week once following St. Thomas's wins over previously undefeated South Dakota State and at Kansas City. She finished the league season fourth with a .339 hitting percentage, fifth with 1.07 blocks per set, 10th with 3.42 points per set and 15th with 2.68 kills per set. Wetter set DI team single-match records with a .619 hitting percentage at North Dakota and with three solo blocks twice, while she also set DI single-season marks with a .321 hitting percentage, 24 solo blocks, 102 total blocks, and 1.04 blocks per set. She recorded a career high nine total blocks versus Valparaiso, the fifth-highest block performance in the Summit League this season.
Rudzitis, from Anoka, Minn., ranked ninth in Summit League matches with 2.99 kills per set, 12th with a .246 hitting percentage and 13th with 3.28 points per set. She ranks fourth among all transitioning teams with 3.07 kills per set overall this season. Rudzitis led the Tommies in kills in 13 matches, including a career high 18 against Chicago State.
Voegele, from Plymouth, Minn., was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week once following the Tommie's first ever non-conference title at the Tommie Invitational Volleyball Tournament. She ranked third in league matches with 4.37 digs per set and was 22nd with 0.25 aces per set. Nationally, Voegele ranked 42nd with 4.77 overall digs per set and set the program's DI record in the stat and with 506 total digs. She was one of two Tommies (Galvin) to start and play in all 28 matches and 106 sets.
Schmotzer, from Madison, Wis., joins Galvin, Rudzitis and Emma Goerger as all-time Tommie selections to the Summit League All-Freshman team. She finished with the program's third most DI single-season solo and total blocks, and the fourth most single-season block assists. Schmotzer ranked 16th in Summit League matches with 0.75 blocks per set and 19th with a .229 hitting percentage.
St. Thomas finished the 2024 season 18-10 overall and 10-6 in the Summit League, which gave it third in the league standings over South Dakota, improving its overall win total by 11 and league win total by seven from a season ago. The Tommies' 18 wins is the most for a transitioning team since 2018 while the team is just one of six transitioning to total as many overall wins since 2011.
After totaling just one Summit League Peak Performer of the Week between 2021-23 (Ella Voegele/11/16/23), the Tommies totaled four in 2024. Galvin and Voegele each represented St. Thomas on the offensive and defensive sides, respectively, following the team's 3-0 weekend at the Tommie Invitational Volleyball Tournament. Wetter earned her first career defensive performer of the week honor on Nov. 12 while Galvin was named the offensive performer of the week for the second time to end the season.
St. Thomas accomplished different firsts on the season including a win over a Power Five program (Iowa, 3-1), a non-conference tournament title (Tommie Invitational, Panther Invitational, Capital Credit Union Classic) and wins against league opponents Denver, Kansas City, South Dakota and South Dakota State. The highlight of the season came as St. Thomas handed (RV) South Dakota State its first loss of the season on the road, starting a four-match winning streak to end the season.
